On a scheduled rest day with his team in Motown for a weekend series with the Yankees, Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander slid over to Belle Isle Park to take in the atmosphere on the Saturday before the 2012 Detroit Grand Prix begins.
An avid racing fan who has taken plenty of turns behind the wheel in the past, the 2011 MVP winner walked around the track meeting fans and other drivers alike before being swept away by Grand Prix chairman Bud Denker for a behind-the-scenes tour. WXYZ.com'sTom Leyden caught up with a giddy Verlander for a quick interview:
Drawn in, obviously, by the fast speeds, the flame-throwing righty gave fans a rare treat by buying a general admission ticket and pretty much showing up at random. It's not every day that you get to see IndyCar drivers up close and meet arguably the most popular athlete in the city at the same time.
On Friday night, he was out on the town, taking in bits of the Tigers game before heading over to Joe Louis Arena for the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert.
At one point during the show, RHCP drummer Chad Smith, who grew up a Red Wings fan in Bloomfield Hills where he graduated from Lahser High School, gave a little speech about how he grew up in Michigan and has had some great memories at the Joe. He then talked a little about Lidstrom before announcing that he was in the building and coming on stage.
Lidstrom then entered stage left to an electric ovation. After almost a minute of cheers, Lidstrom got on the mic and said that, despite having some incredible moments at the Joe over the past 20 years, this -- this moment at a RHCP concert -- "might top it all:"
The Detroit Red Wings' struggles last season really began when they lost defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom for a month with an injury. The Red Wings called Lidstrom's injury a deep bone bruise, and it kept him out for the majority of March. When Lidstrom returned, he appeared in the final couple weeks of the regular season and then played in all five games of the Red Wings' series against the Nashville Predators.
Although he did come back at the end of March, it was clear Lidstrom wasn't 100 percent healthy, and now it has come out that he had more than just a deep bone bruise.
Ken Holland, incidentally, confirmed today that Lidstrom had a hairline fracture in his ankle, not just a deep bone bruise. (cont.)

Nicklas Lidstrom Missed Time Last Season With Hairline Fracture In Ankle
The Detroit Red Wings' struggles last season really began when they lost defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom for a month with an injury. The Red Wings called Lidstrom's injury a deep bone bruise, and it kept him out for the majority of March. When Lidstrom returned, he appeared in the final couple weeks of the regular season and then played in all five games of the Red Wings' series against the Nashville Predators.
Although he did come back at the end of March, it was clear Lidstrom wasn't 100 percent healthy, and now it has come out that he had more than just a deep bone bruise.
Ansar Khan reports that the injury didn't affect Lidstrom's decision to retire because his ankle would have been fine by next season, so it didn't play into Thursday's announcement.
