Update

Fien Sent Down For Perry

To clear a spot for Ryan Perry on the Tigers’ active roster, reliever Casey Fien was optioned to Triple-A Toledo before Saturday’s game versus the Mariners.

Fien was with the big league club for five days, taking Joel Zumaya’s spot after he went down with injury. In one appearance, he pitched two scoreless innings against the Twins.

Ryan Perry To Be Activated Saturday

MLB.com’s Jason Beck reports on his Twitter feed (via the Toledo Blade) that reliever Ryan Perry will be activated from the disabled list and rejoin the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.

Perry pitched three games on a rehab assignment for Triple-A Toledo, recovering from bicep tendinitis. He allowed no earned runs in 3.2 innings, with four strikeouts and four walks.

No word yet on who the Tigers will move off the active roster for Perry. SB Nation’s Detroit Tigers blog, Bless You Boys, thinks Enrique Gonzalez is an ideal candidate. Gonzalez joined the Tigers when Perry was put on the DL.

Ryan Perry Struggles In Second Mud Hens Appearance

Ryan Perry made his second appearance with the Toledo Mud Hens a couple days ago, and it doesn't look like he is ready to rejoin the Tigers anytime soon based on how it went.

36 pitches, 16 strikes for Ryan Perry tonight for @MudHens. So that probably answers that question for #Tigers.

With Fu-Te Ni being sent down to Toledo, some speculated that Perry would take his spot on the roster, but that will not be happening.

Ni optioned to Toledo. No return move announced, though Leyland said it won't be Perry.

The Tigers will announce Ni's replacement before tomorrow night's game.

Update

Ryan Perry's Rehab Assignment Begins

Relief pitcher Ryan Perry began his road back to the majors on Saturday by pitching an inning for Toledo. He is scheduled to pitch a couple innings today before the Tigers evaluate the situation and decide what to do with him. With the bullpen needing a boost, the Tigers undoubtedly would like to be able to bring Perry back, but he's got to pitch well enough to be deserving of a spot on the roster with Detroit. Right now I'm not so sure he's at that point yet.

It was not an entirely smooth inning for Perry, who walked two of the first three batters he faced after replacing Josh Rainwater to start the eighth inning for the Mud Hens. Perry struck out Jeff Clement on a swing and a miss before stranding runners at second and third by forcing Brian Myrow to ground out.

I certainly hope Perry gets back on track, because the Tigers could use another solid reliever. Also, there are a couple pitchers on the 25-man roster that could use a stint in Toledo, so hopefully Perry shows he is back to normal, allowing for him to be brought back.

Rehab Assignment In Ryan Perry's Future?

From Jason Beck:

Ryan Perry appears to be on the verge of a Minor League rehab assignment after throwing a side session Tuesday afternoon with the Tigers at Citi Field.

[...]

"We'll see where he stands and decide whether to send him out," manager Jim Leyland said Tuesday. "He had no pain the other day, throwing with full extension, so I assume he'll be going out shortly."

With some relievers currently on the Tigers' roster struggling (I'm mainly looking at you, Fu-Te Ni), it's important that Perry gets healthy and gets his game back to where it once was. He struggled mightily before going on the DL, and although I'm sure the injury didn't help his situation, it really just seemed like he was off his game. Hopefully some time off and a rehab assignment will help fix whatever was wrong.

Update

Ryan Perry Headed To Disabled List; Enrique Gonzalez Called Up

Relief pitcher Ryan Perry has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Tigers because of bicipital tendonitis in his throwing shoulder. Replacing Perry on the roster is Enrique Gonzalez.

The club purchased the contract of Enrique Gonzalez from Toledo. Gonzalez was a starter for the Tigers’ Triple A team and posted at 3.46 ERA this season, with a 4-5 record. Leyland said he will be used in relief.

Perry had been struggling mightily lately, and Jim Leyland said the pitching issues are "usually a red flag" that something is up. In Perry's case, an injury is what's up. Hopefully he will get healthy and return a much better pitcher than he has been the last few weeks.

Original Story

Ryan Perry Staying With Tigers For Now

Tigers relief pitcher Ryan Perry has had a rough go of it lately. After not allowing a single run in six straight appearances, it all came crashing down for Perry on May 26. He seemingly melted down against the Mariners and allowed four runs in the process of blowing a save. Since then he hasn't had even one good outing, and after giving up a few more runs on Friday, talk started to heat up about his immediate future.

"I’m going to stay with him for awhile," Leyland said. "If things at some point don’t get worked out, you go down and work ‘em out. We’re going to see if we can work it out here."

Personally I would prefer the proactive approach in this situation, much like we saw with Max Scherzer. It was obvious something was off with Scherzer, and he went down to the minors and quickly got it worked out. It seems like Perry is having similar issues, with Leyland mentioning that "his slider is flat."

On the other hand, some players could just lose all of their confidence by being sent down to Toledo. It would seem Perry has hit rock bottom based on his performances lately, but that may just be his mechanics, not something mental like we saw with Dontrelle Willis.

Whatever happens with Perry, his next appearance will likely be a big determinant in if he stays with the Tigers or heads down to Toledo. Another bad outing seems like it would almost force Leyland to make a move. If Perry can start to get things worked out, however, then Leyland's decision to keep him around could be worthwhile.
