Michigan hockey beats MSU on Friday night, 5-1

The Michigan Wolverines (4-3-1, 2-2-1-1 CCHA) got five goals from five different players in defeating visiting Michigan State 5-1 Friday in the first game of a home-and-home series.

The Spartans never held a lead, as Michigan jumped out to a 2-0 advantage on goals from Lindsay Sparks at 6:55 and Boo Nieves at 12:10 of the first period.

Kevin Walrod scored for the Spartans, the only goal for either team in the second period. Wolverines goalie Jared Rutledge shut the door the rest of the game, saving 11 shots in the third period. Derek DeBlois, Kevin Lynch and Jacob Trouba scored for Michigan in the third, capping off the school's 142nd win over its rival in East Lansing.

The Wolverines improved to 4-3-1 on the season, and 2-2-1 in the CCHA with one shootout win.

Michigan, ranked No. 11 in the nation, will travel to East Lansing for the second of the two-game series against the Spartans Saturday.
