The Big Ten hockey tournament is coming to Detroit in 2015 and 2017. In 2014 and 2016, it will be held in Saint Paul, Minn.
With the Big Ten hockey conference beginning in 2013-14, the CCHA is nearing its end. After next season, Michigan and Michigan State, as well as Ohio State, will move to the Big Ten while the rest of the CCHA is spread out to other conferences. This means that the CCHA tournament will no longer exist, taking away a weekend of college hockey in March at Joe Louis Arena.
Every other year, that opening will be filled by the Big Ten hockey tournament. The conference announced on Thursday that its hockey tournament will be held at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit in 2015 and 2017. In 2014 and 2016, the tournament will be held at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn. Here are the exact dates:
March 20-22, 2014 - Xcel Energy Center
March 19-21, 2015 - Joe Louis Arena
March 17-19, 2016 - Xcel Energy Center
March 16-18, 2017 - Joe Louis Arena
The tournament will be a single-elimination format with all six teams participating. The top two seeds each year will get a bye in the first round.
