ESPY Awards 2012: Matthew Stafford Named Best Comeback Athlete

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford won the Best Comeback Athlete award at the ESPYS on Wednesday in Los Angeles.

Upon winning the award, Stafford stated that the city of Detroit was "on a comeback of its own." He thanked his teammates as he accepted the ESPY.

Stafford took home the hardware because of his battle back from major injuries sustained in his first two seasons as a professional. In 2011, he started every single regular season game for the Lions and led Detroit to its first playoff appearance in more than a decade.

Stafford passed for 5,038 yards on the season. He was named Comeback Player Of The Year by the Associated Press in February.
