Detroit came up short on Sunday in the third and final game of their series with the Rangers, as Josh Hamilton and company made things difficult on Tigers starter Rick Porcello in an 8-3 defeat.
Though Porcello needed only 90 pitches to last through six innings, the young pitcher scattered nine hits and allowed six runs (four earned) to cross the plate while on the mound. On a day when Miguel Cabrera and Omar Infante combined to provide four of Detroit's six meager hits, Texas pitchers tallied 10 strikeouts against Jim Leyland's swing-and-miss happy lineup.
Next up for the Tigers is a manageable trip to Minnesota for a three-game set with the Twins. Anibal Sanchez will get the ball for Monday's series opener as he aims to put Detroit in the win column for just the second time in its last six games.

The Ballpark at Arlington is normally a launching pad, but a matchup of two struggling starters and two potent lineups could mean an especially high-scoring series finale Sunday.
Porcello (9-6, 4.62 ERA) has an 8.47 ERA in four career starts against Texas, but improved in his last start against the Rangers (six innings, one run). He went 6 2/3 innings against the Yankees Tuesday and allowed just three runs.
Yu Darvish (11-8, 4.57 ERA) has a 7.04 ERA in his last six starts, but he's been successful against this potent Detroit lineup, with five runs allowed in 13 1/3 innings combined in his two victories over Detroit. The Japanese rookie's fastball command has lagged recently, meaning his array of off-speed pitches aren't as effective against selective big league hitters.
Detroit will not have to face Rangers catcher Mike Napoli, who landed on the 15-day Disabled List with a strained quadriceps.

The Detroit Tigers dropped a tight pitcher's duel with Texas on Saturday night in Arlington, as a ninth inning walk-off hit from the bat of Mike Olt gave the Rangers a 2-1 game two victory.
The Tigers picked up what appeared to be a possible game-winning hit in the ninth inning on a Delmon Young single to right field, but third base coach Gene Lamont opted to hold runner Miguel Cabrera at third base. As expected, a pop out by Jhonny Peralta shortly followed and ruined Detroit's chance for a run.
Detroit reliever Brayan Villareal opened up the bottom of the ninth with a pair of walks before he could record an out, and quickly gave way to Phil Coke who nearly close the door but allowed a seeing-eye grounder from Olt that slid between shortstop and third base. The defeat represents Coke's fourth of the season, and marks the fifth straight appearance where he's either allowed a run or walked away with a loss.
Starter Justin Verlander was his usually sharp self on the mound against Rangers hitters in the game, and scattered seven hits over seven innings of one-run ball in a no-decision. Verlander also added eight strikeouts and did not walk a batter, but struggled to make quick work of his opponents as Texas batters routinely worked the count and left him without a chance to pitch into the later innings.
Now tied 1-1 in the series heading into the deciding game, the Tigers will send 23-year-old Rick Porcello (9-6, 4.62 ERA) to the mound for Sunday's finale.

A strong performance from Max Scherzer on the hill and a four-run sixth inning propelled the Detroit Tigers to a 6-2 win over the Texas Rangers on Friday night in Arlington.
Scherzer allowed just two earned runs in six innings of work in earning his 11th win of the season, striking out eight Texas batters while walking only two. Prince Fielder was just one for four on the night, but the one hit was a two-run home run in the sixth inning as Detroit turned a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead after tallying four runs in the top of the sixth. The dinger was the 20th of the season for Fielder, and the Tigers first baseman now has 84 runs batted in for the year.
The two teams will square off again on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 8:05 p.m. EST from Rangers Ballpark.
