The Barclays 2012 Results: Nick Watney Begins FedEx Cup Playoffs With 3-Shot Victory

The first leg of the 2012 FedEx Cup Playoffs is now a thing of the past, as American Nick Watney reigned supreme over a stacked field to win The Barclays on Sunday with a 10-under score.

The 31-year-old entered his fourth and final round with a two-stroke deficit behind leader Sergio Garcia, and benefited from the tricky Sunday conditions while Garcia and a number of contenders struggled to make birdies. Garcia's final round 75 ultimately dropped him off the pace, as the inconsistent Spaniard tied with last year's champion Dustin Johnson for third place at 6-under.

Michigan native Tom Gillis also turned in a strong week in New York with a 3-under overall that put him in a tie for 10th place. Gillis, a graduate of Oakland Community College, could only muster one birdie in his final round after carding a whopping seven on Saturday, but fought through the difficult conditions and pin placements to earn every bit of his top-10 finish.

Here's the final leaderboard.

2012 Barclays: Michigan Native Tom Gillis In Top Half Of Leaderboard

The Barclays golf tournament is taking place this week in New York and, while most people don't associate many golfers with SB Nation Detroit, Tom Gillis is attempting to make the state of Michigan proud as he stays in the top half of the leaderboard.

Gillis, a Pontiac native and graduate of Oakland Community College, is currently shooting even par through the front nine on the second day of the four-day event to keep himself 2-under in the tournament. That doesn't sound overly impressive, but he's currently in 29th place out of a field of 122 golfers.

The 44-year-old shot 2-under in Thursday's go-around at Bethpage Black, but has been a bit more up and down in the second round as he's picked up a pair of birdies and bogeys through nine holes on Friday.

A full leaderboard can be found over at Golf.com.

The Barclays 2012: Padraig Harrington Atop Leaderboard After Opening Round 64

Ireland's Padraig Harrington stole the show on Thursday morning to kick off the 2012 FedEx Cup Playoffs at Bethpage Black, as the three-time major winner carded a 7-under round of 64 to place himself atop his peers heading into Friday.

Harrington only managed to post a 1-under 35 on the front nine and did not look to be playing at his best when he made the turn, but somehow roared back with six birdies over his final eight holes to finish with a remarkable 29. The impressive round of 64 tied the lowest score from the U.S. Open held at Bethpage back in 2009, but came on a day when a number of top players also tallied a high number of birdies.

Behind Harrington by a mere stroke sits Nick Watney and Brian Harman at 6-under, while as many as four players remain right in the thick of things at 5-under par. Big names Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson each made their respective presences known on Thursday with rounds of 68, while Bill Haas, the 2011 FedEx Cup champion, sits seven strokes back at even par.

The Barclays 2012: TV Schedule, Tee Times, Parings For Thursday

The 2012 Barclays tournament began Thursday morning at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, N.Y., with the typical stars in attendance. The television coverage won't begin until the afternoon, however -- despite play beginning just after 7 a.m.

The Golf Channel is scheduled to extend its coverage from three hours to four, beginning at 2 p.m. ET. That won't be early enough to catch the final holes of the golfers that teed off early Thursday -- Tigers Woods, Rory McIlroy, Zach Johnson and the like -- but there should be plenty of time to get some highlights in over the course of Thursday's televised broadcast.

As far as tee times are concerned, our friends over at SB Nation have put together the handiest list on the Internet for those interested in checking out which golfer is teeing off where, when and with who.
