Kellen Moore Struggles In NFL Debut, Drawing A Lot Of Negative Feedback

Kellen Moore did not perform well in his NFL debut with the Detroit Lions on Friday. There is no nice way to accurately describe his performance ... only very mean ways and somewhat realistic ways. Moore came in and, again, looked really, really bad. He went 4-for-14 on the night with no touchdowns, an interception and a whopping 40 yards. His quarterback rating was 9.8

Only one of his seven drives led to points, and that was a field goal fueled by Joique Bell and his stellar rushing performance. Five of his drives ended in punts and one ended, as noted, in an interception. So yes, we've established it was a bad performance. But there are an awful lot of extremely negative articles about how Moore doesn't belong in the NFL.

Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk says that Moore doesn't look like an NFL quarterback, and has already said it looks like he won't have a future in the NFL. While that could be true, it's just odd to read after a single preseason game. Lions coach Jim Schwartz likely agrees, as he's been angry with the protection from the offensive line, saying that Moore got hit "way too often."

It's definitely worth noting that Moore fired off a couple passes just as he was being planted firmly into the ground. It's also definitely worth noting that he had a couple receivers drop passes. Still, it was definitely a poor performance, but it's clear the Lions aren't putting it all on him and want him to have more chances to shine in the NFL behind Pro Bowler Matthew Stafford.

Lions Vs. Browns: Jim Schwartz Didn't Like Detroit's Play Against Cleveland

It is hard to take too much meaning out of the first preseason game for any NFL team considering the limited number of plays allowed for key players combined with the number of inexperienced players that see the field.

Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz does care about the circumstances. He maintains high expectations for his team's execution regardless of the situation and Schwartz was not happy with what he saw from the Lions in their 19-17 preseason loss to the Cleveland Browns on Friday.

Pride of Detroit has all of Schwartz's post-game comments including his disappointment with the overall effort.

On what he liked and didn't like overall: "The biggest disappointment is the way we came out after halftime. You have a lot of guys on our second and third groups that are jockeying to try to make a good impression to make the team. We have a chance to go out 14-3 at the half, be able to get a stop, get a score and that game looks a lot different at 21-3. Instead, we let them back in the game and that was disappointing when we have guys who needed to play well in those situations and we didn't."

Lions Vs. Browns Final Score: Detroit Loses Preseason Opener 19-17 To Cleveland

The Detroit Lions lost their 2012 preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns 19-17 on Friday night at Ford Field after a late Jeff Wolfert 45-yard field goal, but the Lions are likely happy with the performance of their ground game despite the exhibition loss.

Detroit rushed for 198 yards on 33 carries in the game, good for a 6.0 yards per carry average. Keiland Williams gained 71 yards on nine carries, including a five-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and Joique Bell added 89 yards in the second half on 16 carries.

Matthew Stafford saw limited action under center for Detroit, completing four of seven passes for 51 yards and an interception in the first quarter. Back-up Shaun Hill was eight of 12 for 83 yards, including a three-yard touchdown pass to Stefan Logan. Rookie third string quarterback Kellen Moore struggled in his preseason debut, completing just four of 14 passes for 40 yards and an interception.

Lions Vs. Browns Score: Detroit Lead Trimmed To 14-10 After Three Quarters

The Detroit Lions still lead their preseason opener against the Cleveland, but a third quarter Browns touchdown has whittled an 11-point lead to just 14-10 as the fourth quarter begins.

Rookie Lions quarterback Kellen Moore saw action in the third quarter, and the former Boise State standout struggled, completing just two of nine passes for 22 yards. Moore replaced back-up Shaun Hill, who tossed a second quarter three-yard touchdown pass to Stefan Logan.

Cleveland finally scored a touchdown midway through the third quarter on an 12-yard Seneca Wallace pass to Brad Smelley, capping an eight-play, 43-yard drive. Wallace is the third quarterback of the game for the Browns, after Brandon Weeden and Colt McCoy took snaps in the first half.

Lions Vs. Browns 2012: Game Preview, Kickoff Time, TV Schedule And More

Fans packing the reportedly sold out Ford Field on Friday evening will be looking for a good game of football between the Cleveland Browns and their Detroit Lions, but the two teams will probably be more focused on not getting any more injuries than putting on a show.

Cleveland and Detroit both suffered a blow from a recent injury, with Cleveland losing their first overall pick Trent Richardson for the entire preseason and Detroit losing safety Louis Delmas. Detroit won't be testing the waters with tons of new skill players like the Browns will be doing with Brandon Weeden, so there probably won't be too much use of the first team by the Lions.

Game Date/Time: Friday, August 10, 7:30 p.m. ET

Location: Ford Field, Detroit
