Chris Harris Claimed By Detroit Lions, According To Agent

The Detroit Lions claimed safety Chris Harris off of waivers from the Chicago Bears on Friday, according to the player's agent. Harris was released on Thursday after starting all three games he appeared in for the team this season.

Harris made the All-Pro Second Team after a 2010 season for the Bears that saw him record 50 tackles and grab five interceptions while forcing a pair of fumbles, but the 29-year-old veteran was waived earlier in the week after not being able to find any suitable trade offers prior to the NFL trade deadline.

Albert Elias, Harris's agent and the president of Elias Sports Management, tweeted "Chris Harris claimed by the Detroit Lions! Congrats Chris!" on Friday afternoon. The Lions are obviously looking for help in the secondary this week after signing fellow defensive back Don Carey earlier in the week.

Harris will have his first crack at his old team when the Lions face-off against the Bears on Nov. 13 at Soldier Field.

Update

Lions Release Joe Jon Finley, Add Nathan Overbay To Practice Squad

The Detroit Lions have made a couple moves in the wake of injuries. There was speculation on Wednesday that the team had signed free agent defensive back Don Carey. We didn't know who would be released to make room for Carey, but now that's been cleared up: the casualty is tight end Joe Jon Finley.

Chric McCosky had this tweet about the move, plus another move on the practice squad:

#Lions practice squad moves. Release FB Matt Clapp, TE JJ Finley. Sign CB Don Carey, TE Nathan Overbay

Carey adds some depth to the defensive backfield, but probably won't be an immediate factor or game-changer. Still, it's a solid signing for a guy that has been a bit injured and might have some potential. Joe Jon Finley was the player to be released because Tony Scheffler is healty again and Finley isn't eligible for the practice squad anymore.

Still needing another tight end, they brought Overbay back to the practice squad, releasing Clapp to make room for him.

Detroit Lions Sign Don Carey Following Recent Tryout, According To Report

Don Carey recently worked out for the Detroit Lions front office as the cornerback looked for his next opportunity after being released by the Jacksonville Jaguars prior to the start of the season. The workout apparently went well, too, as the Lions elected to sign the free agent on Tuesday.

Carey won't be a stranger to Michigan as he was born in Grand Rapids before eventually moving to Virginia and spending his college career at Norfolk State before being drafted in the sixth round by the Cleveland Browns in 2009. After spending his rookie year on the injured reserve, Carey played in 15 games for the Jacksonville last season before being a roster-cut casualty.

The Lions haven't officially announced the move so it's unclear who Carey is replacing on the roster, but Pride of Detroit has a guess.

It's not known who Carey is replacing on the roster, but my guess is Vincent Fuller. Fuller was signed prior to the Monday night game against the Chicago Bears as safety depth when injuries were piling up at the position. He has been injured the last couple weeks, and my guess is the Lions placed him on injured reserve or released him to create room on the roster for Carey.

Carey probably won't be a difference-maker for Detroit, but depth in the defensive backfield is never a bad thing.
