Former Michigan State LB Greg Jones Wins Super Bowl, Gets Engaged

Headshot

New York Giants linebacker Greg Jones, who played college football at Michigan State, had quite the Super Bowl Sunday. His Giants beat the New England Patriots 21-17 to win Super Bowl 46, and after the game Jones proposed to his girlfriend, former Michigan State basketball player Mandy Piechowski. She said yes in a very emotional and surprising moment.

"We had talked about wanting to get married next year possibly but in terms of this happening last night, no not at all. I didn't know he had a ring."

Jones got down on one knee on the field and said, "Amanda Piechowski, will you spend the rest of your life with me?"

Jones had teammate Christian Hopkins, a member of the Giants practice squad, hang on to the ring during the game. After it was over, Jones got the ring and got down on one knee to propose on a confetti-filled field. It sounds like it was a perfect moment, especially because Jones will be getting a ring of his own for winning the Super Bowl.

2013 Super Bowl Odds: Detroit Lions Given 18-1 Odds To Win In 2013

The dust has hardly even settled from this year's exciting Super Bowl matchup, so it's hard to believe that there are 2013 Super Bowl odds already out and going from Las Vegas.

Unsurprisingly, the New England Patriots lead the pack after making the Super Bowl in 2012 and coming quite close to winning it as well, with 5-1 odds to take home the trophy. Right behind them are the Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles with 11-2 and 6-1 odds respectively. The current champion New York Giants slot in fifth overall at 8-1, understandable considering their 9-7 record was the weakest record ever by a Super Bowl team.

If you're someone who likes to bet on a long shot, Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos are the lowest 2012 playoff team in the odds at 50-1. The Detroit Lions at 18-1 are probably another smart money bet for a team that could put it together and put together a run like the Giants did this season. The team with the lowest chance of making the Super Bowl according to the odds are the Jacksonville Jaguars, at a lowly 150-1.

Super Bowl 2012: 6 Former Wolverines, Spartans Win Championship With Giants

Quite a few people involved in Super Bowl 46 had ties to Michigan colleges. That was especially the case for the New York Giants, which won the 2012 Super Bowl by edging the New England Patriots by a score of 21-17.

A total of six people from Michigan colleges are employed by the Giants, two of whom are coaches: running backs coach Jerald Ingram and linebackers coach Jim Herrmann. Both Ingram and Herrmann played and coached at the University of Michigan.

Four players -- two from Michigan and two from Michigan State -- played in Super Bowl 46 for the Giants. Michigan had wide receiver Mario Manningham and center David Baas. Manningham had a key catch on the drive where the Giants had the go-ahead score and Baas started. For Michigan State, wide receiver Devin Thomas and linebacker Greg Jones played in the game. Both players were mainly special teams contributors.

On the losing side were five players from Michigan colleges. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and punter Zoltan Mesko both went to Michigan (as did tight end Carson Butler, who is on the practice squad), whereas backup quarterback Brian Hoyer went to Michigan State. Offensive guard Nick McDonald went to Grand Valley State.

2012 Super Bowl TV Ratings: Game Draws 47.8 Rating

The Super Bowl always trumps the ratings for American television on the big night, and most other networks usually don't even bother trying to put on anything interesting to draw viewers away from the big game. It was no different for this season's Super Bowl between the New York Giants and New England Patriots, though there were no viewership records even though the game was between two huge market teams.

It's being reported that the Super Bowl Sunday night got a very impressive 47.8 rating, which is down a single decimal point from last season's Green Bay - Pittsburgh thriller. Interestingly, the ratings went up all the way as far as 48.3 during the halftime show which featured Madonna, LMFAO and Cee Lo Green among others.

Even if those numbers aren't setting any viewership records you would be hard pressed to find any other television programs that would look at those numbers and not take them in a heartbeat.

Best Super Bowl 2012 Commercials

Once again it was a great Super Bowl on Sunday night, but once again there were likely an audience of people watching just so they could see the commercials. There were plenty of decent ones, here's a few of the best of the crop from 2012.

In the category for most bizarre commercial for sure is this effort from Pepsi, which features Sir King Elton John, Flavor Flav and possibly some heavy drug use by somebody behind it.

In the 'musicals' category, Hyundai released this advertisement featuring people at work singing the Rocky Theme Song. You know darn well that if you were in a bar and they had the sound on, everyone in there was singing along to this one when they figured out what was going on. There's not that many songs that can do that, except maybe the Rocky Theme, Hey Jude and the William Tell Overture. (Note, I have yet to find a commercial of Hyundai employees singing the William Tell Overture, but have sent them a very nice letter in the hopes that we'll see that for 2013.)

Any advertisement that features John Stamos getting put through trials of pain automatically makes top lists like this. Is it a Yogurt commercial? Who cares? And more importantly, why did John Stamos not receive more punishment for being a Yogurt tease when he deserves it simply for being John Stamos?

Super Bowl Winners: Where Do Eli Manning's Giants Rank All Time?

Eli Manning has now led his New York Giants to two Super Bowl wins since being picked up from the San Diego Chargers after being drafted in 2004. The Giants team in 2012 may have only had nine wins but it was a team that featured a fantastically built defensive corps, a rumbling running game and a quarterback who after winning his second MVP award has to now be in consideration for one of the better QB's of all time.

Of course, the fact that the G-Men have twice now defeated a team with both a coach and quarterback in consideration for the greatest of all time can't hurt their standings in the all time lore of the Super Bowl's history.

Compared to all of the former Super Bowl champions, where do you think that Eli Manning's Giants teams rank in the all time history? Are they better than the Elway-led Denver Broncos teams of the late 90's? The Bradshaw led teams of the 70's? Are the 2012 World Champions the best of the four Giants teams to have won the Super Bowl?

Super Bowl Commercials 2012: Chrysler, Clint Eastwood Pay Ode To Detroit (VIDEO)

Headshot

In 2011, the general consensus was that Chrysler had the best Super Bowl commercial. It didn't feature animals, jokes or explosions, but that was the point. The commercial, which featured Eminem, highlighted the resilience of Detroit. It took on a very serious tone and introduced the phrase "Imported From Detroit" into popular culture.

This year, Chrysler followed up that commercial with another one that had a powerful message. This year's Chrysler Super Bowl commercial featured Clint Eastwood and discussed how "it's halftime in America" and it's time to fight back. In the ad, Eastwood talked about how Detroit knows "a little something about this" and how Detroit is "showing us it can be done."

Super Bowl 2012 MVP: Eli Manning Earns MVP Honors

Eli Manning had a fantastic game in the Super Bowl, completing 75% of his passes -- a 30 out of 40 clip -- and passing for a touchdown and no interceptions in the New York Giants 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots. His more memorable moments included an absolutely brilliant pass to Mario Manningham late in the fourth quarter which set up the eventual game winning touchdown from Ahmad Bradshaw. Eli finished the game with 296 yards.

This is Eli's second Super Bowl MVP award; he won the 2008 award when his Giants defeated the at the time undefeated Patriots 17-14. In that game, he posted two touchdowns and 255 yards alongside an interception.

Super Bowl 2012 Final Score: New York Giants Are Super Bowl Champions With 21-17 Victory

After a hard fought and immensely entertaining game, the New York Giants are your Super Bowl Champions for 2012.

The first quarter was all Giants, with a safety from Tom Brady on his first pass play of the game and a Victor Cruz touchdown coming from Eli Manning as the time ticked away. The second quarter saw far more action on the Patriots side of things, as they got a field goal and some perfect play by Tom Brady leading to a late TD and a 10-9 lead going into halftime.

The third quarter featured a quick Aaron Hernandez touchdown to put it at 17-9 for the Patriots, but two straight field goals for Lawrence Tynes made it close once again going into the fourth.

The Giants scored a very late TD thanks to Ahmad Bradshaw with less than a minute remaining in the match, giving Brady a one minute drill to try and bring his Patriots back. Unfortunately, two straight drops and a Justin Tuck sack destroyed the Pats final chances.

This is the Giants fourth Super Bowl victory, and the Patriots fourth Super Bowl loss in their seventh try.

VIDEO: Super Bowl 2012 Halftime Show

Madonna 'rocked' it during the halftime show at the Super Bowl on Sunday night, teaming up with names like Cee Lo Green and LMFAO to produce an interesting if not drug induced experience.

Personally I think that the Greek meeting Egyptian themes alone make this the most intriguing halftime show in a very long time. That, and Madonna not trying to force something like 'Like A Virgin' into the playlist helped it out quite a bit. No word on what gambling was done on the Madonna halftime show like was done with the National Anthem.

Clint Eastwood Talks Detroit In Chrysler Super Bowl Commercial

Screen_shot_2012-04-07_at_4

For the second year in a row, Detroit received a pretty heavy spot amongst the Super Bowl commercials courtesy of Chrysler. After Michigan-born Madonna put on a pretty remarkable show (for a 53-year-old), Clint Eastwood emerged from the shadows talking about how "halftime in America" parallels with halftime in Detroit and that the second half for both are about to begin.

Check it out:

If you're from Detroit and that didn't cause horripilation, like last year's, I don't know what will ... Okay, maybe the Detroit Lions actually being in the Super Bowl.

Now, get off my lawn.

Super Bowl 2012 Score Update: Two Giants Field Goals Close Gap To 17-15 Going Into Fourth Quarter

With the score at 10-9 going into the third quarter of play, the New England Patriots used the advantage they had of getting the ball first to their advantage, driving to an Aaron Hernandez touchdown early on. They never replicated the same success, but the New York Giants offense wasn't able to turn it on and respond with any TDs of their own. Tom Brady was an absolute beast after setting the record for most consecutive completions in a Super Bowl by a quarterback.

Later in the quarter, Lawrence Tynes kicked two field goals for the Giants in close range after the Patriots defense began to cover the receivers too well for Eli Manning to overcome it. The fourth quarter will begin with the Patriots holding both the ball and a 17-15 lead in this close game.

Super Bowl 2012 Stats: Tom Brady Sets Completions Record

Tom Brady did not have a particularly effective first half in the Super Bowl but he's begun to turn it on in a big way in the second half. While leading the Patriots to a touchdown to extend their lead to 17-9 he completed 14 straight passes, breaking the former record for most completed passes in a row in a Super Bowl. The game had already boasted the first ever safety in Bowl history.

Brady is continuing to turn up the heat and his completed pass count currently stands at 16 in a row, with the touchdown pass to Aaron Hernandez being the most recent. Time will tell if he can keep the streak going to even higher levels on the next Patriots offensive drive.

Super Bowl 2012 Score Update: Patriots Lead 10-9 Over Giants At Halftime

After a 9-0 first quarter that saw the New York Giants absolutely dominate the New England Patriots, the Pats have finally begun to show life in their offensive game. A safety and Victor Cruz Touchdown paced the scoring until the very start of the second quarter when the Patriots finally got on the board thanks to a short range field goal.

The scoring remained stagnant after that as both teams traded drives through the midfield, but the Patriots finally got themselves into scoring position with a classic Tom Brady drive after the two minute warning which led to the first and only score of the second quarter. With 15 seconds remaining, Tom Brady tossed it to Danny Woodhead in the end zone for a five yard score.

Brady's 96 yard drive in the last two minutes ties for the longest Super Bowl scoring drive in the history of the game. The Pats will get the ball for the start of the second half.

Super Bowl 2012 Injury Update: Giants TE Travis Beckum Out With Torn ACL

Early in the second quarter during a failed offensive drive by the New York Giants, Tight End Travis Beckum was sidelined with a torn ACL after a collision with a Patriots defender.

Beckum had not done much of anything for the Giants thus far in the game, but injuries during the Super Bowl are never a good thing. Hopefully he'll be healed for the 2013 season, but the Giants obviously have more important issues on their minds right now as they drive again on offense in the second quarter.

The score still currently stands at 9-3 in favor of the GIants.

Super Bowl 2012 Scoring Update: Giants Lead 9-0 Over Patriots After First Quarter

The New York Giants have the early advantage over the New England Patriots so far in the Super Bowl, with a 9-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Pats only got one real offensive possession as the quarter went along, with their first attempt with the ball ending in one play when Tom Brady threw an intentional grounding in the end zone and gave the Giants a 2-0 lead.

The lead was built up to 9-0 after a fantastic drive from Eli Manning and the Giants running game led to a fantastic catch for Victor Cruz in the end zone. Tom Brady and the Patriots are driving toward the end zone as the second quarter begins.

Super Bowl 2012 Scoring Update: Intentional Grounding On Tom Brady Gives Giants A 2-0 Lead

The New York Giants have struck first blood in the 2012 Super Bowl as Tom Brady, stranded at his own five yard line, just overthrew everyone on the field and was called for an intentional grounding in the end zone which resulted in a safety for New York. No doubt, this is the first ever 2-0 lead there has ever been in Super Bowl history!

By the way, if you had a Safety being the first points scored in the Super Bowl you just won a nice little bundle of money as the odds of it were 50/1.

Super Bowl 2012 Betting: National Anthem Is A Push At 1:34

For those of you who put big money on Kelly Clarkson's national anthem and whether or not it would go over or under 1:34 before the Super Bowl, you're all likely in for a disappointment. Clarkson's national anthem took exactly 1:34, which would mean it is considered a push.

And for those of you who were betting on Clarkson's clothing selection, she was wearing a plain black shirt as opposed to anything with a team logo on it.

As the game begins, another bet was solved as the coin toss ended up Heads with the Patriots getting the win out of it. There's still plenty more innocuous things to be bet on as the game goes along, so keep the money flowing if you like.

Super Bowl 2012 Commercials: We All Love Dog Commercials!

The commercials aired during the Super Bowl have become something to behold all by themselves. Whether it be with talking babies, women wearing little clothing or a screaming pig, we're sure to see it all tonight.

Dogs have always been an important part to advertising. After all, what's better than having man's best friend selling a product? We have a sneak peek at a few of the commercials we will see on Sunday night, both of which include dogs. Here they are.

Super Bowl 2012: Michigan Collegiate Players Will Get A Ring

No matter what happens on Sunday, a former collegiate player from the state of Michigan will win a Super Bowl ring. For former Michigan Wolverines star Tom Brady, he can take a step towards football immortality. Only Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw have won four Super Bowls as a starting quarterback, and no one has won five. Without question, Brady would go down as one of the greatest in NFL history with a fourth ring.

He is not the only former Michigan college player that can win a championship tonight. Backup quarterback Brian Hoyer played for the Michigan State Spartans, while punter Zoltan Mesko played for Michigan. Tight End Carson Butler is on the practice squad for New England after playing at Michigan.

For the Giants, center David Baas is a Michigan Wolverine, as is wide receiver Mario Manningham. Wide receiver Devin Thomas played at Michigan State, as did linebacker Greg Jones.

Super Bowl Recipies: An Excellent Dessert To Go With Your Pizza And Wings

Everyone loves to have pizza, wings, chips and dips on Super Bowl Sunday, but desserts often go forgotten among all the other delicacies. Fortunately for you, we have an awesome carrot cake recipe that does not require much work and only requires an item or two that you probably do not already have on-hand. By the time you get everything together and in the over, it should not take more than an hour.

Ingredients for cake:

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 ¾ cups white sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups shredded carrots
1 cup flaked coconut
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 (8 ounce) can crushed pineapple , drained

Ingredients for frosting:

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
¼ cup butter , softened
2 cups icing sugar

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch pan.

2. Mix flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and cinnamon; make a well in the center and add sugar, oil, eggs and vanilla. Mix with wooden spoon until smooth.

3. Stir in carrots, coconut, walnuts and pineapple. Pour into 9x13 inch pan and bake for about 45 minutes. Don't panic, the centre will sink a little.

4. Allow to cool; when cool, ice the cake. You can certainly use your favourite cream cheese frosting to ice this cake, but the one I've included is highly recommended (I usually leave the cake in the 13x9 pan and just ice the top).

5. To make the frosting: Cream the butter and cream cheese until smooth; add the icing sugar and beat until creamy.

There are more than 400 reviews for this carrot cake and it has earned a 5-star reputation. It sounds like a winner to me on Super Bowl Sunday, and it should feed quite a few people.

Super Bowl 2012 Prop Bets: Peyton Manning On The Tube, Tom Brady's Pretty Wife And Young Son

The Super Bowl is finally here! Do you know what that means? Football, food, football, drinks, football, commercials and football. Oh, and some more football. And a few more commercials. But even if your favorite team isn't playing on Sunday, surely you can have some fun with a few good 'ol prop bets with your buddies. What have you got to lose, other than a few bucks?

The guys over at Bovada have a complete list of the Super Bowl XLVI prop bets that many will be wagering on this evening. Here are a few of the better ones.

For entertainment purposes only, of course.

How Many Times Will Peyton Manning Be Shown On Television During The Game?

Four times or more (-130)

Three times or less (-110)

This should be easy money, folks. Manning has stolen the show this week between his reported recovery from neck surgery and strained relationship with Colts owner Jim Irsay, and he's a beloved figure in the Indianapolis community. Some may say NBC will focus on the game and nothing else, but let's be honest, they're going to show Peyton on camera a ton.

Smart Bet: Over.

How many times will Giselle Bundchen be shown on TV during the game?

The over-under is set at 1/2 times.

Over (-300)

Under (-200)

Look, if Alex Rodriguez and Cameron Diaz can get on camera while feeding each other popcorn, you can sure bet they'll show Tom Brady's supermodel wife at the game. Not only is Brady one of the most popular figures in the National Football League, but Giselle may be the most famous model in the world. She's beautiful, going to be surrounded by family and will have box seats.

Smart Bet: Over.

If Tom Brady's son is shown on TV during the game will he be wearing a Tom Brady Jersey?

Yes (-170)

No (+130)

Brady's kid is 2-years old and had the whole celebrity obsessed community clamoring for baby pictures when he was born in 2009. You have to expect the child will be with his mother, and we believe she will be shown on camera at least once. Why settle for only one member of Brady's family when you can have two?

As for his attire, what better for a mom to do than dress their baby boy in his dad's uniform?

Smart Bet: I'd go with a pretty safe "yes" here.

Super Bowl XLVI Line And Odds: New England Patriots Three-Point Favorites

Many NFL experts have made a convincing case that the New York Giants will win Super Bowl XVLI, but the lines and odds for the game have remained steady in favoring the New England Patriots throughout the two weeks leading up to the big game which attracts plenty of betting action around the world.

According to Bovada, the New England Patriots are three-point favorites to defeat the New York Giants at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Patriots are also one-point favorites to take the lead into halftime before Madonna takes the field. Theover/under for the game is currently set at 54 points.

Super Bowl Recipe Ideas - Mini Turkey Wraps

If your Super Bowl party is lacking interesting food options and you're planning on settling for pizza and buffalo wings as you usually do, give it a bit of a kick with some home made mini Turkey wraps. Simple and effective, it gives the people something less greasy to munch on. Below is a bare bones recipe for turkey wraps, it's easy to add whatever else you want into the mix for it.

* Tortillas (large)
* Sliced Deli Turkey
* Lettuce (thin romaine works best)
* Provolone Cheese
* Mayonnaise
* Toothpicks

Spread the Tortillas out on a table and spread the mayonnaise evenly on them, layering the other ingredients on top evenly with a heavier emphasis on the turkey. Once finished, roll the tortillas up and chop them up into small wraps, securing each one with a toothpick. Make sure to chill them in the fridge for 12 hours or so before serving.

Of course, that is a very bare-bones recipe for the wraps, you can add whatever other garnishes or vegetables you'd like, or add in other meats like ham to the mix.

Super Bowl Recipe Ideas - Chips And Salsa

So you're hosting a party for the Super Bowl at your place? There's plenty of relatively simple recipes out there that will be crowd pleasers for your party and are relatively easy to put together, and they'll make it so you won't have to just order six pizzas and call that a party.

Salsa is always a crowd favorite for the big game. It's relatively easy to make, it's really easy to make a whole lot of it and it's easy as well to make customized salsas depending on your tastes and the tastes of your guests. It can also be a good, healthy alternative to other favorites like pizza and buffalo wings.

The recipe below is for one batch of a fresh salsa, which will fill about a 1/2 quart cup. It's easy to buy the ingredients in bulk from your local supermarket and throw together big amounts of it if you've got a good food processor.

* Four pitted Roma tomatoes
* One clove of garlic (or more if you really like garlic)
* 1/4 of a yellow bell pepper and 1/4 of an orange bell pepper
* 1/4 of a large red onion
* One Jalapeno
* Lemon/Lime juice to taste
* Cilantro to taste
* Salt to taste

Stick all of it into a food processor -- I recommend using a manual food processor so it doesn't all turn to mush, or else you can just chop everything by hand though that will take a little while -- and run it until it's got a pico de gallo consistency.

For a more 'hot' salsa you can add in a Habanero and a couple Serrano peppers in addition to the jalapeno. For a good Queso mix you simply need to melt a chunk of Velveeta or a similar cheese and add the salsa to it, though I would recommend losing the lemon/lime juice and bell peppers, perhaps using fewer tomatoes as well.

Making home made salsa rather than buying a giant tub of it at the store has the added bonus of being healthy for you and tasting far fresher. Buy several bags of chips and set them out next to it and you're good. When you're done you can always tub it up and give it to a health-conscious friend as well rather than having the jar of it sit in your pantry until next year's party when you'll pull it out again.

Super Bowl XLVI: Patriots Vs. Giants Get Ready In Indianapolis

After years of waiting, the first Super Bowl in the city of Indianapolis is finally set. While the hometown Colts have long pointed toward this Super Bowl as a chance to become the first team to play a Super Bowl in its home stadium that won't be the case. Instead, the Colts will have to watch their long-time rivals, the New England Patriots, face the New York Giants in a rematch of Super Bowl XLII. In that Super Bowl, of course, the Giants denied New England of a perfect season.

The Patriots earned their way here with a fortuitous final few seconds in the AFC Championship game, as Billy Cundiff missed a game-tying field goal wide left with less than 15 seconds left, disappointing legions of Baltimore Ravens fans.

The NFC championship game was even more entertaining, as the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers battled to overtime, where the Giants benefited twice from Kyle Williams mistakes on punts. A muffed punt in regulation led to a touchdown pass from Eli Manning to Mario Manningham, while his fumbled punt with 9:32 left in the overtime set up a game-winning field goal by Lawrence Tynes, giving New York a hard-fought 20-17 win.

So it is the Colts' main rivals against the brother of Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. Let the week building up to the Super Bowl begin!
