Roger Penske Wants BCS Title Game Hosted In Detroit

ELKHART LAKE, WI - JUNE 19: Team owner Roger Penske looks on from the grid during qualifying for the NASCAR Nationwide Series Bucyrus 200 at Road America on June 19, 2010 in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

Roger Penske, who spearheaded the effort to get Detroit the Super Bowl hosting duties in 2006, is now looking to help bring the BCS title game to Michigan.

Detroit has had some major events hosted in its city in recent years, including Super Bowl XL back in 2006, the Belle Isle Grand Prix this weekend, the Final Four, the Frozen Four and so on. Businessman Roger Penske, president of the Detroit Super Bowl Committee back when they were bidding to get Super Bowl XL to Detroit, was a big part of getting those some of those events into Detroit, and he's looking for more top sporting events to come to Michigan now.

Specifically, Penske is hoping to get the new format of the BCS title game to Ford Field. Lions president Tom Lewand has said he is interested in having the BCS title game at Ford Field as well, though they know it's a tough draw being a cold-weather city hosting a winter event.

"Things that are important and exciting in sports are things we need to do and we need to bring to our city," Penske said. "There are a lot of people who have momentum and want to be able to extend some of the good things that are happening in our city. And sports are obviously a great platform."

I asked Penske if he would be on board if Detroit put in a bid.

"Absolutely," he said. "I would, absolutely."

There's currently no format in place for the title game, so any talk of hosting the game or even bidding on it is just that, talk. When everything is finally decided, expect to see Detroit among the list of names of possible places for it to be hosted alongside all of the warm weather spots that will be bidding for the biggest game in college football. They've proven that they can hold sporting events with no problem in cold weather before, which should strengthen their bid.
