Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz raved about running back Jahvid Best's physical condition and his eagerness to return to the field for the Lions despite his current status on the physically unable to perform list.

But Best will remain on the PUP list until doctors clear him to return to contact on the field. After suffering a season-ending concussion in Week 6 last season, the Lions remain cautious with Best and Schwartz minimized expectations that the running back's return was imminent.

"The only thing I'd say is we're measuring Jahvid in weeks, not days," Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz said after practice today. "He's not a day-to-day. A lot of these guys are day-to-day. We're measuring his progress in weeks."

With NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in camp, the Lions cautious approach with Best abides by the league's emphasis on concussion treatment.

With so much litigation pending, Goodell said teams are managing concussions more carefully than ever.

"The Lions are taking a very cautious approach, which is the correct one," Goodell said. "And it's a medical decision and the medical people make those decisions. And that's true throughout the league."
