Lions Training Camp: Cliff Avril Likely To Miss First Preseason Game

With the news that defensive end Cliff Avril ended his contract holdout and reported to Lions training camp, Detroit can move on with building on last year's playoff appearance. Avril's late arrival, however, means that he likely won't be available for the first preseason game this coming Friday:

Avril practiced today and will work out with the team Monday, but he’s not allowed to be in pads until Wednesday – the Lions have Tuesday off – and isn’t likely to play in Friday’s preseason opener against the Browns.

Avril missed a total of eight days of training camp in trying to settle his contract situation. He settled for a one-year franchise tag worth $10.6 million after he had 11 sacks and six forced fumbles in 2011. If he has to get franchise tagged after next season it will be worth approximately $12.7 million.
