The Detroit Red Wings selected nine players on day two of the 2011 NHL Draft. Originally they were set to make a pick on Friday night, but a trade gave that pick to the Ottawa Senators. Detroit got two additional second-round selections for a total of nine picks on day two.

Other local news from the NHL Draft worth mentioning is that future University of Michigan hockey players John Gibson and Brennan Serville were both drafted. Gibson was taken 39th overall by the Anaheim Ducks and Serville went 78th overall to the Winnipeg Jets.
