2012 NHL All-Star Game: Team Chara Boasts Pavel Datsyuk, Jimmy Howard Vs. Team Alfredsson

The 2012 Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Game will be played in Ottawa on Sunday with the puck dropping at 4 p.m. eastern time. Forward Pavel Datsyuk and goalie Jimmy Howard are the Detroit Red Wings' representatives, both playing on Team Chara.

They participated in three of the six skills challenges Saturday night, in which Team Alfredsson beat Team Chara easily by a final score of 21-12. All the results and rules of each event can be found here.

Jimmy Howard saved three of five in the elimination shootout, but was the slowest skater in the Bridgestone Fastest Skater competition. Pavel Datsyuk was stopped on his only shot in the elimination shootout and was on the slowest relay challenge team.

Hopefully, Datsyuk and Howard will have a much better showing during the game. After all, their performance in that setting got them to this weekend anyway.

2012 NHL All-Star Draft: Zdeno Chara Drafts Red Wings' Goaltender Jimmy Howard

Team Zdeno Chara won the coin flip for first pick in tonight's NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft and made Red Wings' forward Pavel Datsyuk his first selection. He added Datsyuk's teammate Jimmy Howard by default in Round 10.

Per the rules, the captains for the draft had to select all three goalies for their team's roster by the end of the tenth round. Chara picked his Bruins teammate Tim Thomas in the Round 2 and picked Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens in Round 7. Team Daniel Alfredsson only needed to select two goalies before Round 10 because his assistant captain is Henrik Lundqvist and he picked LA's Jonathan Quick in Round 3 and Blues' goalie Brian Elliott in Round 7. Therefore, Howard, the NHL's winningest goalie this season, was the last pick amongst the goalies.

Jimmy Howard is 30-11-1 this year with a 2.03 GAA and .924 save-percentage.

2012 NHL All-Star Draft: Zdeno Chara Makes Pavel Datsyuk No. 1 Overall Pick

The NHL All-Star draft is going on in Ottawa tonight with Zdeno Chara of the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins and Daniel Alfredsson of the Senators captaining and making the selections for the two teams.

After a coin flip determined that Chara would have the first pick, he made Detroit Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk his first selection overall. Datsyuk has 14 goals and 39 assists this season, but those numbers only begin to explain the kind of skills Datsyuk brings to the ice; you can't quantify dangle-dangle and an All-Star game is exactly where a star like Datsyuk can shine brightest.

Datsyuk's Red Wings teammate Jimmy Howard will join him on Team Chara, as the winningest goaltender this season was selected in Round 10. Team Chara also has former Red Wing Marian Hossa and the Pittsburgh Penguins' Evgeni Malkin.

2012 NHL All-Star Game Rosters: Nicklas Lidstrom Not Snubbed, Preferred A Weekend Off

While the Detroit Red Wings have to feel good about both Jimmy Howard and Pavel Datsyuk making the roster for the 2012 NHL All-Star Game, there appears to be one snub: Nicklas Lidstrom. He's a seven-time Norris Trophy winner and a 12-time NHL All-Star, and really, hasn't slowed down much at all. However, Lidstrom wasn't actually snubbed, according to a Tweet from Pierre LeBrun:

Lidstrom informed the league well in advance that he'd rather have the weekend off. He's earned that.

It makes sense, having appeared in 12 All-Star games thus far and nearing the end of his career. Lidstrom has nothing left to prove and though it is always a huge honor and it will never be "been there, done that," a four-day off period will certainly do him well.

Still, Lidstrom is playing well and as defensively as ever this year. He's got eight goals and 15 assists, but his real assets come in his shot-blocking ability. Yahoo has him blocking 51 shots thus far this season, and he currently sits with a +17 on the year. Chances are, he'd have been added to the roster if he hadn't contacted the league about making it.
