Red Wings Earn Road Win, 3-1 Over Flames

The Detroit Red Wings continued their superbly solid season with a solid road win over the Calgary Flames, winning 3-1 at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Tuesday evening.

Calgary will feel unfortunate that they couldn't do more with the chances they were given, outshooting the Wings 29-25 but being stoned time after time by Jimmy Howard. Howard's 28 save effort in the net gave him his 31st win on the year.

The Wings, as they so often do, opened the scoring when fourth liner Cory Emmerton netted one early in the first, and Mike Cammalleri tied the game on a Flames power play in the second. Despite that, the Flames offense never seemed to click as chances failed to provide rebounds and shots failed to navigate past Howard.

The Wings finally took the lead again at 11:29 in the third period off a Jiri Hudler goal and then iced the game at 15:58 off a goal by Drew Miller.

Red Wings Vs. Flames: Detroit Kicks Off Road Trip In Calgary

The Red Wings are in Calgary on Tuesday to face the Flames, the first of four straight road games for Detroit.

At 33-16-1, Detroit heads into the post-All-Star Game schedule with the league’s most points (67), the fifth-best goals per game average (3.1) and the sixth-best goals-against average (2.3).

Even so, the Red Wings are just 13-14-0 on the road (compared to 20-2-1 in Hockeytown), and have, for whatever reason, struggled against the Flames, who are 23-21-6.

One of those 14 road losses came in Calgary, a 3-2 defeat on Dec. 22, the teams' most recent matchup. On the year Detroit is just 1-2 against the Flames.

Indeed it was the Flames who were the last team to win in Detroit. They walked out of Joe Louis Arena on Nov. 3 with a W, handing the Red Wings their sixth straight defeat.

All was not lost, though: Since that loss to Calgary, Detroit has won a franchise-record 17 consecutive home game. The longest home winning streak in NHL history is 20 games, a mark held by the 1975-76 Philadelphia Flyers and the 1929-1930 Boston Bruins.

Tuesday's game will start at 9 p.m. and air on FSD+.
