Red Wings Vs. Capitals Final Score: Detroit Loses Fifth Straight, 5-3

The Detroit Red Wings have now lost nine of their last 12 and five straight after dropping Monday night's contest to the Washington Capitals, 5-3.

The Caps, who are currently fighting for the No. 8 spot in the Eastern Conference, scored three goals in the first period, two coming off the stick of Alex Ovechkin on the power play.

Detroit scored five minutes into the second period on a power play goal of their own, but fell back behind three goals after Keith Aucoin wristed one past Jimmy Howard with only a couple minutes left in the period.

In the third, Todd Bertuzzi scored less than a minute into the period and Danny Cleary got the Wings within a goal with eight minutes left to provide some hope. Unfortunately, the Red Wings couldn't get anymore past Braden Holtby, who was playing in just his second game this season, and the Caps put in an empty netter with half a minute left to seal it.

Detroit will head to New York to play the Eastern's first place Rangers on Wednesday.

Red Wings Vs. Capitals Score Update: Detroit Down 3 Goals Going Into Third Period

The Detroit Red Wings will have a three-goal deficit going into the third period, as they trail the Washington Capitals 4-1 at The Joe Louis Arena.

Trailing 3-0 going into the second period, the Red Wings lit the lamp 5:15 into the period on a Kyle Quincey power play goal, taking advantage of a Matt Hendricks holding penalty.

Unfortunately, the Capitals struck back just minutes before the second intermission when Keith Aucoin snuck one by Wings' goaltender Jimmy Howard for his third goal of the season.

The Red Wings continue to outshoot the Caps, 22-19, but Washington has all the breaks. Assuming the Capitals hang on, the Red Wings will be looking at a five-game losing streak and nine losses in their last 12 games.

Red Wings Vs. Capitals Score Update: Alex Ovechkin Scores Twice In First, Washington Leads 3-0

Losers of four straight and nine of their last 12 games, the Detroit Red Wings are back in their own building taking on the Washington Capitals on Monday night. Unfortunately, it was all Caps in the first 20 minutes. Alex Ovechkin scored twice and Washington has a 3-0 lead on the Wings heading into the first intermission.

The Capitals got on the scoreboard just under eight minutes into the first after Niklas Kronwall went to the box for high-sticking -- Alex Ovechkin scored the power play goal for his 31st of the season. He netted his 32nd of the season six minutes later on the power play again, but not before Mike Knuble scored an even-strength goal.

The Red Wings outshot the Caps in the first period, 12-10, but continue to struggle on defense. Nicklas Lidstrom, please come back soon.
