Sunday's game for the Detroit Red Wings was a double loss. The Chicago Blackhawks won the game, 2-1, their third win against the Red Wings this season, but the Wings were without goaltender Jimmy Howard for two periods, as well. Howard left the game after the first period and is day-to-day with a lower body injury.
Joey MacDonald did an admirable job after he went between the pipes, but the one goal he allowed was one too many. Patrick Kane's goal at 18:41 in the second period proved to be the game-winner since the Red Wings were unable to answer back with their own score over the remainder of the game. MacDonald stopped 12 of 13 shots.
The first two goals of the game came within the first 6:03 of the game. Patrick Sharp made it a 1-0 game after netting his 25th goal of the season on a power play. Niklas Kronwall tied it at 6:03 with the help of Darren Helm and Brad Stuart.
Detroit (43-20-3, 89 points) will visit the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday, March 6.

As the second period began in Detroit, Joey MacDonald lined up between the pipes for the Red Wings. Starting goaltender Jimmy Howard was mysteriously absent after being in net for the first period. Quickly the Red Wings declared him as day-to-day, although initially it wasn't clear what was wrong with him. Now we have some details but nothing too specific.
Holland tells Free Press: Howard is day-to-day, lower body injury

Howard missed quite a bit of time last month with a broken finger. This is what allowed MacDonald to join the team and take over the backup goaltending job. Howard made his return on Feb. 21, and Sunday's game was his fourth appearance since coming back from the injury.
While Howard's new injury does not appear to be serious, it doesn't seem he will be coming back into the game against the Chicago Blackhawks. After Sunday, the Red Wings' next game is Tuesday at the Philadelphia Flyers, so expect an update on Monday about his status for that game.

The Detroit Red Wings are in a 2-1 deficit against the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday afternoon. To make matters worse in the game, goaltender Jimmy Howard left the game due to a lower-body injury. Joey MacDonald has stopped seven of eight shots since entering the game.
The Blackhawks struck first with Patrick Sharp's 25th goal, a power play score that came at 3:17 in the opening period. That lead didn't last too long. Three minutes later Niklas Kronwall netted one past Ray Emery for his 14th goal of the season. The two teams played scoreless hockey for most of the second period before Patrick Kane scored at 18:41.
Emery has made 16 saves on 17 shots while Howard allowed just one goal on five shots during his time in net.
