The Tigers will get one of their starters back on Saturday, but in what is beginning to feel like a sick joke, they will lose another:
Jackson has been reinstated from DL today. Peralta has been placed on paternity list. Hernan Perez recalled from Lakeland. #tigers

Jackson is returning from what was originally diagnosed as a mild abdomen strain that was supposed to only limit his status to day-to-day. He ultimately wound up on the DL, though, before finally being able to take part in a couple rehab games the past couple days. Jackson was 1-for-8 with a walk and an unsuccessful steal attempt on his assignment, but most importantly, he feels healthy and ready to return to the big club.
As for Peralta, he shouldn't be gone long. His wife is expecting to give birth to their first child and he wants to be there for it. Understandable.
If shortstop Perez sees any action during Peralta's absence, he will be the 40th Tiger to see playing time this season and 21st position player.

According to the Detroit Tigers Director of Media Relations, Brian Britten, injured outfielder Austin Jackson will begin a rehab assignment with the Tigers' Triple-A affiliate, the Toledo Mud Huns on Thursday. Jackson injured his abdomen in a game against the Minnesota Twins on May 16 when he flied out to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning. Following the out he was seen talking to the Tigers' trainer and left the game.

After a few false starts in a desire to return, Jackson was placed on the 15-day disabled list and is now working his way back into the lineup. At the time of this writing, there is no time table for a return but one has to imagine that it will come sooner rather than later unless there is another setback.

The Detroit Tigers just wrapped up a three-game set against the Cleveland Indians in which they were largely ineffective. One reason for that is the fact that they were without center fielder Austin Jackson, who has missed time with an abdominal strain that was initially referred to as "minor."
Jackson was supposed to return on Tuesday, but was scratched less-than an hour after the lineups were announced. News came out on Wednesday that the Tigers were considering placing him on the 15-day disabled list, and according to Brian Britten on Twitter, the move is done:
Jackson will be placed on 15-day DL tomorrow retro to 5/17 with abdominal strain. Raburn will be reinstated from bereavement list tomorrow.
— Brian Britten (@BBritten_Tigers) May 24, 2012
Jackson had been hitting off a tee in the lead-up to his return on Tuesday, but when he tried to hit live pitching and round the bases, the pain in his abdominal flared up and he experienced a setback. As noted, the stint on the DL is retroactive to May 17 when he was injured, which would put him back in the lineup on June 1, in time to start a three-game set at home against the New York Yankees.

After being scratched last second from the Detroit Tigers game against the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday, it looked like Austin Jackson was feeling a bit of pain from his abdominal injury that had kept him day to day for the last week. Unfortunately it might be a bit worse than that, and Jackson may be forced to take a stint on the 15-day Disabled List.
Originally, the plan had been to get the center fielder back for this week's series against the Indians. Jackson had practices with the team and done some hitting exercises off a tee prior to game one but the pain came back when he tried to hit off live pitching and run:
"The thing that worries you is that you don’t know if doing what he did today will set him back," Leyland said. "He was not ready to go. I could tell when he took batting practice."
Jackson didn't think he suffered any additional damage following his pregame workout, but said he had to shut himself down after one round of swings.
"It was right before I was about to make contact," he said. "It grabs right there in that moment. And I had nothing behind it. I was able to run more freely, but trying to hit 92-95, I don’t think I’m ready for that."
There's no reason to rush Jackson back for Jim Leyland, but a DL stint isn't what anyone had in mind for the young star. Quintin Berry will likely keep the center field duties as Jackson regains his health, DL appearance or not.

No more than an hour after it was announced that outfielder Austin Jackson would be making his return to the field after a four-game absence, manager Jim Leyland flipped the script and scratched Jackson from the lineup. The Tigers' Brian Britten announced on Twitter that utility man Don Kelly would take Jackson's spot in center field, while infielder Ramon Santiago will be bumped up to the No. 1 spot in the order.
Jackson has been scratched from tonight's lineup. Santiago will lead off and play second base. Kelly will bat ninth and play center field.

It's likely that Jackson simply didn't feel well enough in pre-game warm-ups to fully give it a go, and there was obviously no logical reason for Leyland to rush his budding star in the outfield back prematurely. Jackson should be able to get on the field for game two of the series tomorrow, but stay tuned with SB Nation Detroit's StoryStream for more updates on his condition.
Here are the updated lineups for Tuesday's game:

The Detroit Tigers open up a crucial three-game series in Cleveland on Tuesday night, and will officially welcome back leadoff hitter Austin Jackson after the outfielder missed the last four games with an abdominal injury.
Tigers officials were originally mum on whether Jackson would take the field against Cleveland starter Ubaldo Jimenez for Tuesday's opener or not, but director of media relations Brian Britten eventually broke the news on Twitter roughly two hours before game time.
Tonight's lineup: Jackson 8, Dirks 7, Cabrera 5, Fielder 3, Young dh, Boesch 9, Peralta 6, Avila 2, Santiago 4. Porcello is starting.
— Brian Britten (@BBritten_Tigers) May 22, 2012
Jackson, who is hitting .331 with five home runs and 17 RBI after just 36 games, has raised his on base percentage nearly one hundred points compared to last season (from .317 to .414) and appears to be a lock for a career year. He will assume his usual spot atop the order after the four-game absence, and should benefit from a bit more protection now that No. 2 hitter Andy Dirks has emerged as an everyday starter.

3. Miguel Cabrera - 3B
4. Prince Fielder - 1B

When Austin Jackson was lost last Wednesday to an abdominal injury against the Minnesota Twins, the Detroit Tigers lost a lot of their offensive pop. Fortunately, the Tigers center fielder could be back in the lineup under a week after the injury.
After participating in team activities during the weekend but still feeling soreness when he tried to run, Jackson is now targeting Tuesday, when the Tigers start a series against the division leading Cleveland Indians, as a good return date.
"When I went to run, you know, try to get up to 80 percent at least, it didn’t feel that good," Jackson said Sunday. "It was still kind of hurting to run, so that’s why I’m thinking maybe a couple more days."
The Tigers will certainly welcome Jackson's bat back to the lineup -- he has hit an impressive .323/.409/.950 so far this season. They'll need the help against a hot Indians team that has taken the AL Central by storm in the first 40 games of this season.

Detroit Tigers center fielder Austin Jackson left Wednesday night's game against the Minnesota Twins after the bottom half of the fourth inning. Jackson made the last out of the inning by flying out to right field and was seen in the dugout talking with trainer Kevin Rand before walking into the clubhouse. Don Kelly replaced Jackson in center field the next half.
Fox Sports Detroit broadcasted a couple innings later that Jackson was diagnosed with a mild abdominal strain and is day-to-day.
Jackson has been one of the Tigers' best hitters this season, entering Wednesday's game with a .323/.409/.950 hitting line and was 2-for-3 with a run batted in and two runs scored when he exited the game with his injury.
