Tigers Outright Collin Balester To Triple-A Toledo

On Tuesday afternoon, the Detroit Tigers announced that the club had outrighted the contract of right-handed pitcher Collin Balester to Triple-A Toledo, which means that he has officially cleared waivers after being designated for assignment on May 22 so that the Tigers could purchase the contract of outfielder Quintin Berry.

Balester, a 25-year old reliever, was 2-0 in 11 games pitched and had a 6.50 ERA with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 12-11 in 18 innings pitched this season. He was acquired during the offseason in a trade with the Washington Nationals for another 25-year-old right-handed reliever named Ryan Perry, who has a 10.80 ERA in six-plus innings pitched this season.

Tigers Designate Collin Balester For Assignment, Purchase Quintin Berry's Contract From Toledo

Immediately following the Detroit Tigers' 5-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night, the organization made a pair of roster moves:

The 25-year-old reliever Balester had a 6.50 ERA in 11 games with 11 walks in 18 innings. Balester was acquired during the offseason for 25-year-old Ryan Perry, who has a 10.80 ERA in six-plus innings with the Nationals this season.

As for Berry, he's a 27-year-old outfielder currently hitting .275/.365/.689 for the Mud Hens. Jim Leyland says he likes his speed (he has 19 steals in AAA) and defense, two of the three major things that the Tigers are missing with Austin Jackson out with an abdominal strain. Berry is expected to start in center on Wednesday, which would indicate that Jackson is not as close to returning as we may have thought.
