Even on an afternoon when a rain delay threatened to force him off the mound early, Detroit Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer turned in a masterful Father's Day performance in a 5-0 win over the National League's Colorado Rockies.
Scherzer bounced back from a string of mediocre starts on Sunday by striking out 12 batters over eight shutout innings. While he did manage to scatter seven hits, the often erratic Scherzer, who is now 6-4, did not walk a single batter for only the third time this season.
Offensively, the Tigers were locked-in at the plate from the very first pitch, and racked up a whopping 15 hits throughout the afternoon. In addition to a perfect 5-for-5 game from speedy outfielder Quintin Berry, who also stole his 9th base of the year, backup catcher Gerald Laird turned in a 3-for-4 day from the plate with a key RBI double that proved to be of the game-winning variety. By game's end, Brennan Boesch and Jhonny Peralta would finish as the only two Detroit starters without a hit.
Winners of five of their last seven games, the Tigers will suit up for another crucial interleague three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals at Comerica Park on Tuesday evening.

Fans hoping for a great day at the ballpark on Father's Day were interrupted by plenty of rain, as Sunday's Detroit-Colorado series finale was forced into a weather delay in the top of the 4th inning.
The Tigers racked up eight hits and four runs against Rockies starter Jeremy Guthrie over just three innings to grab a 4-0 lead, and definitely appeared primed for a big offensive day before the rain forced the two teams into their respective locker rooms. Detroit pitcher Max Scherzer has been otherwise perfect for the Tigers aside from scattering five hits, and has already tallied six strikeouts over 3.2 innings on the mound.
Detroit catcher Gerald Laird broke the scoreless tie in the 2nd frame with an RBI double that plated outfielder Don Kelly. Prince Fielder then proceeded to pave the way for a huge 3rd inning with an RBI double of his own that allowed Ramon Santiago to step to the plate with the bases loaded and knocked two more runs home.

The Detroit Tigers evened their series with the Colorado Rockies on Saturday with a 4-1 win behind Doug Fister's first victory of the season in his first start since May 28. The Tigers will now hand the ball to Mark Scherzer as the Tigers look for their third series win in a row.
Scherzer could definitely use a boost as he is winless in the month of June and is 5-4 with a 5.76 ERA in 13 starts this season and he hasn't fared well against Colorado either. In four career starts against the Rockies, Scherzer is 0-3 with a 5.48 ERA. Scherzer will be facing the Rockies' Jeremy Guthrie who has struggled this season as well. Guthrie is 3-5 with a 6.91 ERA.

The Detroit Tigers avenged their Friday night loss to the Colorado Rockies with a 4-1 win on Saturday to even the series. For Detroit, it was the return of pitcher Doug Fister, who was making his first start since May 28 after coming back from the disabled list.
It had to be refreshing for not just Fister but the Tigers coaching staff to see him have such a solid performance, since he is there most logical and probable option to start on Thursday against the St. Louis Cardinals. This was also Fister's first win of the season.
The Tigers scored in the first, fourth, fifth and seventh innings to spread out their run production, while the Rockies didn't score until the ninth and final inning.

After the Detroit Tigers finish their series against the Colorado Rockies, they'll get Monday off. Then Justin Verlander and Rick Porcelo will move up to start Tuesday and Wednesday against the St. Louis Cardinals, respectively. As for Thursday's starter ...
"Right now, I have no idea," manager Jim Leyland said . "I could tinker with it and I could pitch (Doug) Fister if I wanted."
The Tigers are down to a four-man rotation with Casey Crosby no longer in the majors and it probably won't be until next week before they are back to a five-man rotation. This means Leyland and the Tigers' pitching staff are going to have decide whether or not Fister is ready to take the mound since he was just activated from the disabled list. That decision is heavily dependent on what happens on Saturday, which will be Fister's first start since May 28.

On Friday night, the Detroit Tigers announced via the Twitter account of Brian Britten that right-handed starting pitcher Doug Fister will be activated from the disabled list on Saturday after missing time with a left side strain. Fister will make his return start on Saturday when the Tigers host the Colorado Rockies at Comerica Park. His last appearance came on May 28 against the Boston Red Sox when he allowed six runs on 11 hits in five innings pitched. Fister will look to record his first win of the season, as he is 0-3 in six starts this year.

It was dead even between the Detroit Tigers and Colorado Rockies in their series opener on Friday night, until the Rockies exploded for a six-run 10th inning to keep the Tigers at bay.
As mentioned in Friday night's recap, the Tigers have developed a trend losing the first game of these interleague matchups and coming back to take the next two (see Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds).
That's something Tiger fans can feel good about going into Saturday's game.
Doug Fister (0-3, 3.15 ERA) will take the mound for Detroit, facing Christian Friedrich (4-2, 5.85 ERA) in the pitchers' duel. Take a look at the game schedule and broadcast information:

Maybe the Tigers are starting a trend. This is Detroit's third consecutive interleague series, following sets with the Cubs and the Reds. The Tigers won two out of three in each of those series, but not before losing the first game to each team. That continued again on Friday night, as the Colorado Rockies beat the Tigers by a final score of __.
Brennan Boesch drove in Austin Jackson in the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4. That score stayed notched at 4-4 until the 10th inning. Wilin Rosario popped a two-run single to break things open, and Colorado added six more runs to make it 12-4. Things really got ugly when Carlos Gonzalez and Michael Cuddyer belted back-to-back home runs to punctuate the late rally.
Jose Valverde made a throwing error that put runners on second and third, setting up Rosario's RBI single. The Tigers closer was stuck with the loss.
Doug Fister will look for his first win of the season as the series continues on Saturday.

The Detroit Tigers can continue their recent trek through interleague opponents on Friday evening, as the Colorado Rockies come to town for a three-game weekend series at Comerica Park.
Getting his third career start for the Tigers on the mound will be 23-year-old lefty Casey Crosby, who has shown promise but still owns a woeful 9.35 ERA and 1.85 WHIP on the year. Crosby will face a Colorado lineup that features a trio of seasoned veterans in Michael Cuddyer, Jason Giambi and Todd Helton in the 4-5-6 spots, and an ideal table-setter in outfielder Dexter Fowler atop the order.
Back in the lineup after being called up from Triple-A Toledo on Thursday is utility man Ryan Raburn, who manager Jim Leyland has opted to hit seventh and play in left field. Raburn responded to his most recent opportunity with a 2-for-3 day from the plate against the Cubs on Thursday, but will need to keep swinging a hot bat to remain in the lineup over guys like Quintin Berry and Andy Dirks.
Here are the starting lineups for the series opener:
Tigers
1. Austin Jackson - CF
2. Brennan Boesch - RF
3. Miguel Cabrera - 3B
4. Prince Fielder - 1B
5. Delmon Young - DH
6. Jhonny Peralta - SS
7. Ryan Raburn - LF
8. Danny Worth - 2B
9. Bryan Holaday - C
Casey Crosby - SP
Rockies
1. Dexter Fowler - CF
2. Marco Scutaro - SS
3. Carlos Gonzalez - LF
4. Michael Cuddyer - RF
5. Jason Giambi - DH
6. Todd Helton - 1B
7. Jordan Pacheco - 3B
8. Wilin Rosario - C
9. Chris Nelson - 2B
Jeff Francis - SP
