In their biggest series of the season thus far, the Detroit Tigers capped off an impressive three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox on Sunday with a home run-happy 6-4 win.
Slugger Miguel Cabrera led the way with a pair of solo shots on the day, and smacked out his 300th homer of his young career in the third inning on a blast to straightaway center field. The historic home run, which measured in at more thlan 450 feet, landed in Comerica Park's often unreachabe ivy area behind the camera wells in center, and quite literally left fans chuckling to themselves in amazement. Along with Cabrera's two blasts, starting outfielders Quintin Berry and Brennan Boesch each managed to send a souvenir into the bleachers.
Providing a steady presence on the mound after his extremely rocky start last time out was Tigers 21-year-old prospect Jacob Turner, who went 5.1 innings to pick up his first career major league victory. Turner scattered seven hits and gave up three earned runs on the day, but was quickly yanked by manager Jim Leyland after serving up a two-run bomb to Alex Rios in the sixth in order to preserve the youngster's first big league win.
Now up by 1.5 games in the American League Central, the Tigers will stay in the division on Monday when they open up a three-game road series with the Cleveland Indians.

After being foolishly served a Philip Humber fastball over the plate, Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera pounded out his 300th career home run in jaw-dropping fashion on Sunday afternoon against the White Sox. As MLB.com's Jason Beck points out, Cabrera became just the second Venezuelan-born player to accomplish the feat:
Cabrera sends Humber offering to CF camera well for his 300th career HR. Second Venezuelan-born player to do it, joining Andres Galarraga.
— Jason Beck (@beckjason) July 22, 2012
Cabrera added another solo home run earlier in the game to reach 299, and quite literally demolished the ball over the 420-foot sign at the base of center field for No. 300. Considering how only a handful of players in baseball are even capable of reaching Comerica Park's ivy around the fountain and camera wells at all, let alone routinely, it's quite remarkable that Cabrera has started to make insane home runs like this feel, well, normal.

With Saturday's win over the Chicago White Sox, the Detroit Tigers hold the American League Central lead for the first time since May 1. Detroit will need a rapid improvement from top prospect Jacob Turner Sunday afternoon if they have any hope of earning a three-game sweep and making that lead last.
In his previous start, only his second of 2012, Turner (0-1, 10.29 ERA) made it through just two innings against the Angels and gave up seven runs. He'll be facing a Chicago lineup that's scored just 18 runs in its past eight games (2.3 per game) and a team that's just 3-6 since the All-Star Break.
Phil Humber (4-4, 5.77 ERA), making his second start since returning Tuesday from a right flexor strain, takes the ball for the White Sox. He earned a win by going six innings and allowing four runs against Boston Tuesday after sitting out since June 16 with the injury.
Detroit has won 14 of 18 against Chicago at Comerica Park and can extend their AL Central lead to 1.5 games with a win Sunday afternoon.
First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 pm CT and will be televised on Fox Sports-Detroit.

The Detroit Tigers have had a rough time in the American League Central, getting battered by the Cleveland Indians and generally forgotten by the Chicago White Sox through the first half of the season. But they've steadily improved with wins in their last three outings, while the White Sox lost four of their own, including game one against the Tigers on Friday. On Saturday, the Tigers were just half a game back of the AL Central lead, and they went out and took it with an impressive 7-1 win over the White Sox.
As noted by Josh Worn on Twitter, the Tigers also moved into first place on July 21 a season ago, and they didn't relinquish it, finishing at the top of the AL Central. It's the first time since May 1 this year that they've been in the lead in the AL Central, and the first time since April 22 they've had the lead to themselves.
Rick Porcello came up just short of a complete game, lasting through eight innings and giving up consecutive singles in the ninth before giving way to Joaquin Benoit. Porcello was given the win, having allowed just one run off of five hits, with no walks and four strikeouts. He moves to 7-5 on the season. Chris Sale was the losing pitcher on the day, giving up five runs over seven innings with seven hits and four walks against six strikeouts. He falls to 11-3 on the season.
Chicago got the scoring started with an RBI in the fifth inning, but the Tigers responded immediately, with Austin Jackson scoring Gerald Laird and Danny Worth with a double to right center in the bottom of the inning. Brennan Boesch then hit a three-run home run in the sixth and Jackson picked up a couple more RBIs in the eighth, scoring Jhonny Peralta and Laird on a single to center.
After Porcello left in the ninth, Benoit retired all of the batters he faced. The first two went out on a double play and he struck out the third batter to end the game.
Next, the Tigers will try and maintain the lead on Sunday while trying to complete a sweep of the White Sox. That game is set for 1:05 p.m. Eastern.

How this series plays out will have a major impact on the AL Central race between the Detroit Tigers and the Chicago White Sox. The Tigers struck the first blow with a 4-2 win on Friday, and a victory on Saturday would give them possession of the division lead.
Chicago's starting pitcher will be Chris Sale, who leads the team in both wins (11) and ERA (2.11). Detroit took their last matchup against Sale back in April, but will still likely need a good showing from starter Rick Porcello (6-5, 4.66 ERA) to carry this one.
The White Sox will play with the same lineup that started in Friday's matchup, while the Tigers will rotate in Ryan Raburn, Gerald Laird and Danny Worth for Quintin Barry, Alex Avila and Ramon Santiago.
White Sox
1. Alejandro De Aza - CF
2. Kevin Youkilis - 3B
3. Adam Dunn - DH
4. Paul Konerko - 1B
5. Alex Rios - RF
6. A.J. Pierzynski - C
7. Dayan Viciedo - LF
8. Alexei Ramirez - SS
9. Gordon Beckham - 2B
Chris Sale - SP
Tigers

2. Ryan Raburn - LF
3. Miguel Cabrera - 3B
4. Prince Fielder - 1B

After Friday's 4-2 win, the Detroit Tigers have put themselves in position to steal the AL Central division lead from the Chicago White Sox in Saturday's game. They'll face a tough challenge in Chicago's Chris Sale, though, who visits Detroit with an 11-2 record and a sterling 2.11 ERA on the season.
Detroit had success against the pitcher earlier in the year, grabbing three earned runs and five hits in an eventual 5-2 win back on April 15. But Sale has been on something of a hot streak, winning his last eight decisions after a May 12 loss against the Kansas City Royals.
The Tigers will send Rick Porcello to the mound, who despite his mediocre overall record (6-5) has pitched well against the White Sox. Porcello won both starts against Chicago this year and has won four straight against the team.
Saturday's game will be at Comerica Park and begins at 4:05 p.m. ET.

The Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox started a weekend series that will shape the AL Central race on Friday. Behind reigning AL Cy Young winner Justin Verlander, the Tigers notched a 4-2 win at Comerica Park, continuing their blistering pace since the All-Star break.
Justin Verlander pitched eight innings, striking out six and walking two. It was, by his standards, a fairly nondescript performance, but it was good enough for his 11th win of the season. He now has six wins in his last seven starts.
Chicago got on the board first when Alejandro De Aza belted a home run to right field, scoring Alexei Ramirez for 2-0 lead in the top of the third.
Verlander got some help from his teammates in the bottom of that same inning. Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Delmon Young all drove in runs to put the Tigers on top. Austin Jackson added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Jose Valverde closed out the game for his 18th save of the season.
Detroit is back in action at 4:05 p.m. on Saturday.

Sitting a mere 1.5 games out of first place in the American League Central, the Detroit Tigers will be given a golden opportunity to swap places with the division-leading Chicago Whites Sox this weekend as the two rivals begin a three-game series.
On the mound for Friday's game one, a scenario due entirely to the wise post-All-Star break shakeup by manager Jim Leyland, will be none other than Tigers ace Justin Verlander. Opposing Verlander for the White Sox is veteran right-hander Jake Peavy, who has struggled against the Tigers over three starts this year.
Despite holding a 3.12 earned-run average and 7-6 record on the season, Peavy has given up 11 earned runs over 19.2 innings pitched against Detroit so far in 2012. The Royals tattooed Peavy for six runs on 12 hits in his first start after the All-Star break back on July 14 as well, and Detroit hitters will be looking to continue the trend on Friday evening from Comerica Park.
Here are Friday's starting lineups:
Tigers
1. Austin Jackson - CF
2. Quintin Berry - LF
3. Miguel Cabrera - 3B
4. Prince Fielder - 1B
5. Delmon Young - DH
6. Brennan Boesch - RF
7. Alex Avila - C
8. Jhonny Peralta - SS
9. Ramon Santiago - 2B
Justin Verlander - SP
White Sox
1. Alejandro De Aza - CF
2. Kevin Youkilis - 3B
3. Adam Dunn - DH
4. Paul Konerko - 1B
5. Alex Rios - RF
6. A.J. Pierzynski - C
7. Dayan Viciedo - LF
8. Alexei Ramirez - SS
9. Gordon Beckham - 2B
Jake Peavy - SP
