Tigers Vs. Royals Final Score: Detroit Loses 2-1

Despite notching 12 hits, the Detroit Tigers were defeated 2-1 by the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night. With all of those hits being spread out over nine innings, the Tigers somehow managed to score just one run despite their numerous opportunities.

Jeremy Guthrie was excellent for the Royals once again, giving up just one run over 7.1 innings despite allowing ten hits. The Tigers never drew a walk against the right-hander and Prince Fielder's double was the team's lone extra-base hit of the night, preventing the team from taking advantage of its many one-base knocks.

Rick Porcello pitched fairly well for the Tigers, allowing two runs on eight hits over five innings, but he was never in a position for the win. The Detroit bullpen was lights out, though, combining to allow one hit and one walk over three shutout innings.

After losing 9-8 to the Royals in the series opener on Tuesday, the Tigers managed to score just one run over the final 18 innings of the series. Luckily, the Chicago White Sox also lost on Thursday, so Detroit continues to trail by three games in the AL Central standings.

Tigers Vs. Royals: Detroit Looks To Avoid Sweep

The Detroit Tigers had a golden opportunity to take advantage of some losses by the Chicago White Sox and take the lead in the AL Central prior to their crucial upcoming series, but find themselves fighting off a three-game sweep at the hands of the Kansas City Royals. Chicago saw its six-game winning streak broken against the Baltimore Orioles and they had dropped two straight prior to Wednesday, before coming back with an 8-1 win, while the Tigers suffered a lowly 1-0 shutout at the same time.

Detroit will take on Chicago for a crucial three-game set on Friday, and will meet them again on Sept. 10. The Tigers are three games back in the AL Central, which is definitely a two-team race at this point. But first, the Tigers really have to try and pick up a win against the Royals - they can beat the White Sox all they want, but if they don't beat teams like Kansas City, they won't win the division.

Rick Porcello will take the mound for the Tigers. He's 9-9 on the season with a 4.60 earned-run average. He's coming off a loss to the Angels on Aug. 24, but only gave up two runs over six innings in that outing and suffered from a lack of run support. Jeremy Guthrie will take the mound for the Royals, with a lowly 5-12 record and a 5.71 ERA. He gave up six runs over 2.2 innings in his last outing, but was given a no-decision.

Tigers Vs. Royals Final Score: Detroit Falls 1-0 On Wednesday Night

With the Chicago White Sox dropping the first two games of a four game series vs. the Baltimore Orioles this week, the Detroit Tigers had a prime opportunity to make up ground in the A.L. Central against the Kansas City Royals. But after dropping their second straight game in a 1-to-0 loss in K.C. on Wednesday night, the Tigers will now be looking to merely keep pace with Chicago.

For the second night in a row, the Tigers had the tying run in scoring position with one out in the ninth inning with Royals closer Greg Holland on the mound, but were unable to get the run home. In tonight's game it was Andy Dirks who stood on second base with one out, but Holland struck out both Delmon Young and Jhonny Peralta to secure the victory for Kansas City.

Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez took the loss, but pitched his best game a Tiger, allowing only seven hits and one run over seven innings.

Tigers Vs. Royals: Game Time, TV Schedule And More

The Detroit Tigers suffered a tough loss on Tuesday night, scoring eight runs but still dropping a game in which Justin Verlander started and Miguel Cabrera came to the plate in the ninth inning with the tying run on third base. Wednesday, though, is a new day, and offers a new opportunity to try and make up ground on the Chicago White Sox, who have had their own trouble with the Baltimore Orioles this week.

The Tigers will turn to Anibal Sanchez, who has been up-and-down since being acquired from the Florida Marlins. He'll be looking to build on his last start, in which he gave up one earned run and struck out six in 6 2-3 innings against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Royals are one of a handful of teams that Sanchez has never faced in his career.

He'll be opposed by Royals starter Bruce Chen, who has settled into a groove in the last month after a disastrous run to open July. The good news for the Tigers is that they've beaten up on Chen in two starts this year, tagging him 14 hits and seven earned runs in 7 2-3 innings in 2011.

Game date/time: Wednesday, Aug. 29, 8:10 p.m. ET

Location: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Mo.

TV: FSN Detroit

Tigers Vs. Royals Final Score: Justin Verlander Roughed Up In 9-8 Loss

Not counting Detroit's July 31 game vs. the Boston Red Sox that was called after the top of the sixth due to rain, Detroit Tigers starter Justin Verlander hadn't been knocked out of a game before the sixth inning in 2012. That changed on Tuesday night in Detroit's 9-8 loss to the Kansas City Royals, who hung eight earned runs on the Tigers ace in just 5.2 innings.

Despite Kansas City busting out to a 7-3 lead after the second inning, the Tigers managed to tie the game at eight after a Jhonny Peralta homer in the eighth inning off of Royals reliever Aaron Crow. That lead, though, would be short lived, as Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas broke the tie with a double off of Phil Coke that plated Lorenzo Cain (though the run was charged to Tigers reliever Brayan Villarreal).

The Tigers still found themselves in nearly perfect position to win the game. Austin Jackson made his way to third base with one out in the ninth inning with Royals closer Greg Holland on the mound and Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera at the plate, but Holland won the battle, striking Cabrera out. After an intentional walk of Prince Fielder, Delmon Young flied out to center to end the game.

The series will continue on Wednesday at 8:10 p.m. ET with Anibal Sanchez and Bruce Chen on the mound.

Tigers Vs. Royals: Miguel Cabrera Returns To Lineup At Third Base

Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera is back in the lineup Tuesday after having two straight days off from baseball for the first time in over a year. Taking Sunday off to rest a sore right foot ended Cabrera's streak of 158 consecutive MLB games played, and was the slugger's first game off since missing an Aug. 25, 2011 contest to be at the birth of his daughter.

The Tigers start Justin Verlander (12-7, 2.50) in the series opener at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. The Royals counter with Luis Mendoza (7-9, 4.26).

Lineups as follow:

Detroit Tigers (69-58)

Kansas City Royals (56-71)
