Jim Leyland earns 600th win as Tigers manager

Gary A. Vasquez-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Detroit manager Jim Leyland earned his 600th win with the Tigers on Monday, making him the third Tigers manager to reach that milestone.

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland won his 600th game as Tigers manager when Detroit defeated the Kansas City Royals 6-2 on Monday. Leyland became the Tigers' manager prior to the 2006 season and reached the 600 game milestone in his 1,126th game with Detroit. The Tigers have had a .500 record or better in all but one season under Leyland and have made the playoffs twice. Prior to Leyland's tenure in Detroit it took the Tigers 1,463 games to reach 600 wins.

Leyland has the third most wins in Tigers history, behind Sparky Anderson and Hughie Jennings. Anderson earned 1,331 wins with the club from 1979-1995 while Jennings earned his 1,131 from 1907-1920. The 67-year-old Leyland ranks 15th in wins among managers all-time and leads all active managers with 1,669 wins. Leyland has won the Manager of the Year award three times, most recently with the Tigers following the 2006 season.
