Detroit Lions cornerback Alphonso Smith was fined $15,750 by the league for his horsecollar tackle on Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall in Chicago's 13-7 win on Monday night, according to a report by Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press on Friday.

Smith's tackle, in which he grabbed and tackled Marshall with two hands in the shoulder area, occurred in the second quarter and was flagged on the field at the time.

With key members of their secondary, Bill Bentley and Jacob Lacey, still hampered with injuries, Detroit signed Smith on Nov. 18 to provide depth to the unit. Last season with the Lions, Smith racked up 27 tackles and three interceptions in 11 games. In his debut on Monday this season with Detroit, Smith recorded four tackles and two pass breakups.

In Sunday's upcoming contest against the Seattle Seahawks, Smith, according to the report, figures to see "significant action" if Bentley isn't able to play. He also practiced with the Lions' first-team nickel defense on Friday.
