Greg Bartram-US PRESSWIRE

A knee injury could keep Nebraska Cornhuskers starting running back Rex Burkhead out of the team's upcoming game against the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday.

Nebraska Cornhuskers starting running back Rex Burkhead could miss Saturday's game against the Michigan Wolverines due to an ongoing knee issue, according to Adam Rittenberg of ESPN. The senior left last Saturday's game against the Northwestern Wildcats in the first quarter after just four carries.

In Nebraska's loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes on Oct. 6, Burkhead suffered a slightly more serious version of the same injury, according to head coach Bo Pelini, but the Cornhuskers had a week off before the match-up against the Wildcats.

This season, Burkhead has carried the ball 47 times for 405 yards and three touchdowns, excellent numbers after leading the team with 1,357 rushing yards as a junior. Sophomore Ameer Abdullah has thrived in his place,, putting up 615 rushing yards, 129 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns already this season.

In the team's season opener on Sept. 1, Burkhead suffered an ACL sprain, but he only missed two games before returning.
