Michigan State basketball guard Russell Byrd hasn't caught any breaks when it comes to injuries. He has dealt with foot problems for the last year, and MSU sent word out on Tuesday that he will need yet another surgery on his left foot. This will be his third separate surgery in the last year, although he isn't expected to miss any of the 2011-12 season because of it.
"We are confident this procedure will assist with the speed and efficiency of the healing process and ensure a full return for Russell this season," said Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo. "After consulting with one of the top foot and ankle specialists in the country, one who has worked with several professional athletes with similar injuries, we were reassured that Russell has received first-class care from the MSU medical and athletic training staff, but unfortunately, Russell's foot has been slow to heal. This aggressive approach will better position Russell for long-term health, while also allowing him to be on the court this fall."
The expected recovery time for this surgery is four months. That means that Byrd should be back to full health by the end of September, just in time for practice to begin for next season.

Michigan State freshman Russell Byrd is waiting for a gap in the bone of his surgically repaired foot to close so he can begin practicing with his Spartan teammates sometime this season.
Byrd called it “frustrating” but also said doctors are sure it will close soon — and that he won’t need another surgery. In the meantime, he can start taking jumpers Saturday. He’ll have another X-ray next week, and so on until doctors see what they need to see to allow Byrd to start practicing.
Coach Tom Izzo previously stated it might not be worth it to activate Byrd even if he’s healthy by Christmas, which it looks like he won’t be. However, MSU has struggled so far this season under the duress of a tough early schedule. They’ve fallen from the top 10 in the polls and a return by Byrd to the team might be the kind of boost the team needs heading into the Big Ten schedule.

Russell Byrd, a freshman basketball player for Michigan State, is expected to have surgery on Friday to repair a stress fracture in his foot. Because of the recovery time that would come along with this type of procedure, Michigan State may simply shut Byrd down for the upcoming season.
Izzo said with the recovery time Byrd faces, it might be unrealistic to expect him to return in time to salvage his freshman season.
"I still think if he came back in two months, would it be worth it?" Izzo said. "It might be until after Christmas before he’s even ready to practice, and then it could be two or weeks before he’d be in any kind of shape to play."
If Byrd has to miss the season because of this injury, he would simply be redshirted and plan to start his playing career at MSU next year.
