Korie Lucious To Transfer To Iowa State

Former Michigan State guard Korie Lucious is going to be joining fellow ex-Spartan Chris Allen at Iowa State. After visiting Iowa State in February, Lucious decided today to transfer there.

Lucious was dismissed from the Michigan State basketball program in January by Tom Izzo for displaying "conduct detrimental to the program." Although it wasn't clear if his dismissal was for only the rest of the season or for good, Lucious' mother said the next day that her son would be transferring. In the wake of that news he set up visits with Iowa State and Marquette, and now he is set to become a Cyclone.

Already at Iowa State, as mentioned, is Chris Allen. He was kicked off the Michigan State basketball team last summer and transferred to ISU. He will be eligible to play next season, during which time Lucious will take a redshirt year.

Another connection Lucious has to Iowa State is that Diante Garrett is there. Garrett, like Lucious, is from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Garrett is a senior, so he won't be around when Lucious joins the program next season. I'd imagine Lucious heard from both Garrett and Allen while he made his decision, though.

Korie Lucious To Transfer To Iowa State Or Marquette?

When Korie Lucious was dismissed from the Michigan State basketball program, the interesting thing in the press release was that it said the dismissal was for the remainder of the season, not for good. Reading between the lines, the impression was that the door to return next season might be open for Lucious; he was just done for the 2010-11 season.

The day after the news broke about his dismissal, Lucious' mother said that her son would be transferring to a new school, much like Chris Allen did after being dismissed last summer. As it turns out, Lucious may do exactly the same thing as Allen.

Lucious not only made it pretty clear over the weekend that he intends to transfer, but the first school he visited was Iowa State, which is where Allen ended up transferring. Lucious visited the program over the weekend and got a chance to catch up with Allen, as well as Diante Garrett, who, like Lucious, is from Milwaukee.

Although Iowa State would seem to be the favorite based on his connections to the program, Lucious still plans on visiting Marquette, his hometown school. After he takes that visit, Lucious said that he will decide "in a couple weeks." Based on his comments it doesn't seem returning to Michigan State is even an option at this point, so it looks as though Lucious will be a Cyclone or a Golden Eagle come this time next month.

Report: Korie Lucious' Mother Says He Will Transfer From Michigan State

When the news of Korie Lucious being dismissed from the Michigan State basketball team was announced on Tuesday, six key words in the school’s official statement seemed to be "for the remainder of the season." One interpretation of those words could be that Lucious would have a chance to return to the team for his senior season. Another might be that final decisions would be made by coach Tom Izzo and the MSU athletic department later on.

But Lucious and his family may have already reached a decision of their own. Lucious’ mother, Latonia Guider, told SpartanNation.com that he will transfer from the MSU basketball program.

"I love my son dearly. We certainly didn’t want his career at MSU to end this way, but we thank all of you for your prayers and thoughts. Korie will finish the semester at Michigan State and Coach Izzo has said he will help Korie find a new school. We are grateful to God for Coach Izzo and Michigan State. My son has admitted he made mistakes. I ask that people remember him and judge him not just by mistakes, but by the man I believe him to be, and that he will grow into."

Wednesday morning, Lucious told the Lansing State Journal’s Joe Rexrode, "I still don’t know what I’m gonna do." But maybe Lucious just didn’t want to say what his decision was at that moment (while he was in class). Or perhaps he didn’t know that his mother was going to give the news later in the day.

As Sean mentioned in the original post of this StoryStream, it’s already been a rough season for Lucious with suspensions and injuries. If his athletic career at MSU is indeed over, this is certainly an ignominious ending for him.

In Sunday’s New York Times, Izzo said that he was already planning to push Kalin Lucas more as he gets healthier. Perhaps that means MSU will shorten its rotation and restrict backup point guard duties to Keith Appling through the rest of the season.

Korie Lucious Dismissed From Michigan State Basketball Team For Rest Of Season

Junior guard Korie Lucious has been dismissed from the Michigan State basketball team for what Tom Izzo called "conduct detrimental to the program." Lucious' dismissal was announced late Tuesday night, just two days before the Spartans host Michigan at the Breslin Center.

Below is Izzo's brief statement on the decision to remove Lucious from the team.

"Unfortunately, Korie Lucious displayed conduct detrimental to the program. My focus is on this team for the remainder of the season."

The statement released by MSU says that Lucious has been dismissed for the rest of the season, seemingly leaving the door open to a possible return next season. Nothing explicit is mentioned about a possible return, but the door was not closed, either.

On Twitter shortly before the release went out, Lucious said, "Man did I really mess up this time." In the prepared statement, this was his comment:

"I didn’t live up to the standards of the program. Unfortunately, I let my teammates, my coaches, and myself down, and wish them the best for the rest of the season."

Lucious' 2010-11 season got off to a rough start, as he was suspended two games (one regular season contest and one exhibition) for being arrested for drunk driving. The charge was later reduced to reckless driving, but Izzo still suspended him. Also, Lucious had to have knee surgery in September, further adding to a rough beginning to the 2010-11 season. Things have obviously ended pretty roughly for Lucious as well, as he is now off the team for at least the rest of this season.
