On Sunday at approximately 2:45 p.m. ET, Michigan State will take on Saint Louis in the third round of the 2012 NCAA tournament. The Spartans advanced to the third round with an 89-67 win over the 16th-seeded LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds on Friday night. Earlier, No. 9 Saint Louis won 61-54 over No. 8 Memphis. Quite a few people had predicted that Memphis would upset Michigan State, but the Tigers weren't even able get out of the second round.
After their win on Friday, the Billikens improved to 26-7 on the season. Aside from a stretch in the middle part of the season where they lost three out of four games, the Billikens have been outstanding in 2011-12. They opened the season with 12 wins in their first 13 games, and after the rough patch, Saint Louis went on to win 13 of its next 16 games, including the matchup with Memphis on Friday.
For Michigan State, the No.1 seed in the West Region, a win would mean a trip to the Sweet 16 in Phoenix against either Louisville or New Mexico. A win would also put the Spartans another step closer to returning to the Final Four and going for their third national championship in program history.
Sunday's game between Michigan State and Saint Louis will be shown on CBS. Tim Brando and Mike Gminski will serve as the announcers.
