After a guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge of impaired driving, Michigan State junior Derrick Nix was fined $853 and sentenced Thursday to 24 hours of community service, according to MLive.com.
Nix was arrested on April 3 after he admitted at a traffic stop that he had smoked marijuana before he began driving.
As Diamond Leung of MLive.com explains, his sentence extends beyond fines and community service.
"Nix must also attend between eight to 12 sessions of an outpatient marijuana-specific substance abuse program and attend a victim impact panel on June 21 at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center."
Last season, Nix averaged 8.1 points per game and 3.8 rebounds per game as a junior. He has been reinstated to the team by head coach Tom Izzo.

As mentioned earlier today, Michigan State center Derrick Nix was reinstated to the basketball program after issuing an apology for his arrest for possession of marijuana and driving with the presence of drugs charges. We have video of his regrets via WXYZ's Tom Leyden:
Nix's marijuana charge was dropped altogether and his driving in the presence of drugs was reduced to impaired driving, to which he pleaded guilty. His sentencing will be May 11 and the charge carries a maximum penalty of 93 days in prison and a fine of $300, in addition to a possible suspension of license of 180 days. It's unlikely Nix will receive that, but he will see further punishment from head coach Tom Izzo.
Nix is expected to step up and be the team's leader next season with the departure of Draymond Green and something like this can help someone grow up real fast.

On Thursday morning, Michigan State center Derrick Nix pleaded guilty to a charge of impaired driving, a significantly reduced charge from the charge of operating a vehicle with the presence of drugs. The guilty plea was reported by mlive.com, which also notes that the charge for possession of marijuana was dropped outright. Nix was arrested on those charges nine days ago, and was suspended by MSU following it.
Nix will have sentencing on May 11, and the charge of impaired driving carries a maximum punishment of 93 days in jail and a $300 fine, on top of a driver's license suspension of 180 days. When Nix was arrested, Tom Izzo said that his future with the program was in serious jeopardy.
That being said, another report from mlive.com says that Nix will be reinstated, provided he meets all the conditions set forth by Izzo. On Thursday, Izzo reiterated that there will be punishment for Nix, whether it's something that's made public or not, and that he wants to be clear that this kind of thing is unacceptable. Nix also had a statement:
"I want to regain my trust with a lot of the players, coaches and family and refocus my whole life now and continue to finish out the rest of this year and become the leader that everybody was looking forward for me to be," Nix said.
Niz apologized to everyone he possibly can think of, and it was certainly an emotional one. As it stands, there's no word on whether or not Nix will miss any time next season as punishment. The report includes a quote from Izzo that says he does intend to "make life miserable" for Nix in the meantime.

After a few days without any information, we've got some more details on Michigan State basketball player Derrick Nix and his arrest on April 3. Joe Rexrode posted an update on Monday with some more details on the arrest, courtesy of the official police report from the East Lansing Police.
East Lansing Police released the report today on the April 3 arrest of MSU basketball player Derrick Nix, who had a joint with 0.6 of a gram of marijuana confiscated, told an officer he had smoked earlier in the night and later agreed to a blood test and tested positive for marijuana.
Nix took the sobriety test and wasn't able to complete the balance or counting tests as instructed. He missed some numbers while counting backwards. Nix was pulled over when made a left turn at a red light at 12:20 a.m. on April 3. Nix admitted he had smoked earlier in the night so for Michigan State, they might have all the information they need.
As it stands, Nix is suspended indefinitely, but figured to be a factor in the team's plans next season before the incident. He averaged 8.1 points and 2.8 rebounds this past season.
