Michigan State is set to kick off its 2012 season on Friday night against Boise State.

Michigan State's quest to ends its Rose Bowl drought won't begin until Big Ten play opens at the end of September. However, the Spartans' quest to reach the BCS and put themselves in national championship contention begins on Friday when Boise State comes to town for their season opener.

Michigan State vs. Boise State is really one of the most intriguing non-conference games of the 2012 college football season. The Spartans are breaking in new starting quarterback Andrew Maxwell, and the Broncos are going to try and replace several players, including quarterback Kellen Moore, who is now with the Detroit Lions.

Another reason this game is so intriguing is because Boise State is known for pulling off upsets in games against teams from big-time conferences. An upset at Spartan Stadium against Michigan State would continue the Broncos' penchant for taking down BCS schools, but Boise State head coach Chris Peterson recently admitted that it will be "tough sledding" for his team.

Friday's game between Michigan State and Boise State will kick off at 8 p.m. ET. ESPN will have the broadcast.
