For much of Friday night's game, the Michigan State Spartans looked like they were on the way to becoming the Boise State Broncos' latest season-opening victim. But Spartans running back Le'Veon Bell eventually ran over and wore down the Broncos defense en route to a 17-to-13 victory. Bell, a junior, set a career high with 210 yards on 44 carries.
He also scored Michigan State's two touchdowns, the latest of which came with 8:12 left in the game and put Michigan State up for good. The Spartans dominated in total yards and time of possession, but allowed the Broncos to hang in the game and eventually maintain a small lead thanks to four turnovers. Three of those came on interceptions by new quarterback Andrew Maxwell, with the fourth coming on a fumble in Boise territory by receiver Tony Lippett.
But State's defense clamped down in the second half, keeping Boise State off the scoreboard. Bell took the baton from there, carrying the load on Michigan State's final scoring drive and eventually draining the clock to clinch the victory.
The Spartans will visit the Central Michigan Chippewas next Saturday, Sept. 8.

After an action-packed first half, the Michigan State Spartans and Boise State Broncos played to a stalemate in the third quarter of Friday night's game. The Spartans managed to move the ball a bit in the quarter, but turnovers once again put the brakes on a potential scoring drive. This time, it was a fumble by receiver Tony Lippett, who coughed the ball up in Boise territory after catching a strike from quarterback Andrew Maxwell.
Running back Le'Veon Bell continued his massive game, finishing the quarter with 31 rushes for 152 yards on the game. His third quarter was highlighted by a 35-yard run on third-and-long where he reversed field behind the line of scrimmage.
Another drive was stalled when the Spartans dialed up a reverse pass to Lippett, but it was sniffed out by the Broncos for a 10-yard loss.

The Boise State Broncos are not going to roll over. That was the lesson learned by the Michigan State Spartans in the second quarter of Friday night's game, as the Broncos put 10 points on the board and will go into the half up on Michigan State by the score of 13-10. The Spartans were on the verge of tying the game or even taking the lead, but quarterback Andrew Maxwell threw an interception at the goal line with six seconds left in the half.
It was Maxwell's third interception of the half, the second of which was returned by Boise State safety Jeremy Ioane for a 43-yard touchdown. It was that score that tied the game at 10, with Boise taking the lead on a field goal with 4:23 left in the half. It could have been worse for the Spartans, but they recovered a fumble on a botched Boise State screen.
The Spartans offense has been carried in the first half by running back Le'Veon Bell, who has 108 yards on 22 carries in the first half. That will likely be a theme as the game continues.

The Michigan State Spartans started their 2012 season with a touchdown. It came on a Le'Veon Bell one-yard rush and it capped a 12-play, 60-yard drive. Bell's touchdown, though, wasn't even the most exciting play of that opening drive. That would go to Bell getting a little air time.

For the quarter, Bell ran for 58 yards on 13 carries as new quarterback Andrew Maxwell settled into his starting role. Maxwell was steady under center for the Spartans, completing five of nine passes for 48 yards and an interception on a bizarre deflection down field.
The Spartans defense dominated the Boise State Broncos' new look offense initially, but Joe Southwick and co. started to move the ball as the quarter wore on. A Spartan stop inside the five-yard line kept the Broncos out of the end zone on their third drive.

When the No. 24 Boise State Broncos take on the No. 13 Michigan State Spartans, they will be without four players who have been suspended, Boise State announced prior to the game.
The sole starter of the four suspended players is senior long snapper, Chris Roberson, who earned a one-game suspension for violation of an unspecified team rule. Third-string quarterback Jimmy Laughrea and backup wide receiver Dallas Burroughs also earned the same punishment for unspecified team rule violations.
The fourth and final suspended player will be third-string running back Jay Ajayi, who pled guilty to misdemeanor petty theft in December and sat out of the MAACO Bowl in December.
Snapping in Roberson's place will be Kevin Keane, a walk-on transfer from Ohio Wesleyan.

SB Nation Detroit's writers expect another successful season for the Michigan State Spartans in 2012.

After months of anticipation, No. 13 Michigan State will finally kick off the 2012 season with a matchup against No. 24 Boise State on Friday night. The Spartans are beginning their first season since 2008 without former starting quarterback Kirk Cousins, who is now the backup quarterback for the Washington Redskins.
Last season, the Spartans won their first bowl game since 2001 by knocking off the Georgia Bulldogs in the Outback Bowl, capping their second consecutive 11-win season. That was Cousins' last college game, though, and now Andrew Maxwell is hoping to follow in his footsteps as a strong signal-caller.
Considering that the Broncos have also lost a long-time starting quarterback in Kellen Moore, who graduated this year, we're looking at a matchup between two high-quality programs in transition. Even so, expectations for both teams are high, especially as Boise State looks to transition into the Big East following this season.
According to the line over at OddsShark, the Spartans are actually a seven-point favorite entering Friday's game. Boise State has never lost a season opener under head coach Chris Petersen, though, even while facing the likes of Georgia, Oregon and Virginia Tech in different openers.
Game date/time: Friday, Aug. 31, 8 p.m. ET
Location: Spartan Stadium, East Lansing, Mich.
TV: ESPN

After opening up as four-point favorites, the No. 13-ranked Michigan State Spartans are now expected to beat No. 24 Boise State Broncos by a touchdown, the line tracker at OddsShark.com is showing. Friday's season opening contest (8 p.m ET) between the Big Ten and Mountain West Conference opponents is one of the more anticipated showdowns of college football's non-conference slate.
Both teams enter the contest with greenhorn quarterbacks, as the Spartans are starting Andrew Maxwell, who's taking over for Kirk Cousins, while the Broncos are replacing Kellen Moore with junior Joe Southwick. Overall, Boise State returns only seven returning players.
The Broncos will feature their usual up-tempo offense, which Michigan State has been preparing for.

The 13th-ranked Michigan St. Spartans are prepared for their opening game with the 24th-ranked Boise St. Broncos and their up-tempo, no-huddle offense.
In order to get ready the Spartans have been running two huddles at practices to run plays against the defense in fast succession. One huddle breaks and the runs a play and as soon as that play ends the other huddle breaks to run the next play. Coach Mark Dantonio knows that it is on his defense to adjust.
"We have to adjust to the tempo of the football game," Dantonio said. "That's number one. You always have to do that defensively to an opposing team's offense. Whether you adjust to the rhythm of how fast the plays are coming in, whether there's no‑huddle or not. You have to adjust to the speed of the game, game speed, speed of their players, get a feel for who they are up front."
Michigan State will host Boise State on Friday night at 8 p.m. ET at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.

Boise State University has named junior Joe Southwick as its starting quarterback for the Broncos' Aug. 31 opener vs. Michigan State, according to the football program's official Twitter account.
Southwick spent the last two seasons as the primary backup to Kellen Moore. In 15 career games, he has completed 40 of 54 passes for 400 yards and two touchdowns. In addition, he has rushed 15 times for 47 yards.
The Spartans now know who to plan for, though there likely isn't a ton there in terms of video to study on Southwick, who spent the offseason competing for the starting job with sophomore Grant Hedrick. It's worth noting that MSU has a new quarterback of its own, as Andrew Maxwell will replace Kirk Cousins for the 2012 season.
The 13th-ranked Spartans and the No. 24 Broncos are set to kick off on Friday night at 8 p.m. ET from Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.
