Forced to leave his team's frustrating loss to Ohio State on Saturday, Michigan State Spartans starting center Travis Jackson is now expected to miss the remainder of the 2012 season with a broken leg, according to Joe Rexrode of the Detroit Free Press.
A third-year sophomore, Jackson was carted off the field in the second quarter of Saturday's one-point loss, and reportedly suffered both a knee injury and a broken leg on the same play. The 6'3, 280-pound lineman started 10 games for head coach Mark Dantonio last season and was one of the biggest keys to tailback LeVeon Bell's success on the ground so far in 2012. As expected, Jackson's teammates were disappointed to hear the frustrating news.
"It's sad," Spartans offensive tackle Skyler Burkland said. "He's one of our leaders on the offensive line, and he's one of my best friends. It hurts."
Senior Ethan Ruhland, who filled in for Jackson on Saturday, will likely see an expanded role going forward, but it's unclear how Dantonio will configure his offensive line heading into the team's Oct. 6 game at Indiana. Though Ruhland is a three-year letterwinner with plenty of big-game experience, there's no question that the loss of Jackson is a serious blow to Michigan State's offense.

Quarterback Braxton Miller led the Ohio State Buckeyes to a 17-16 win over Michigan State Saturday.
Miller passed for 179 yards, ran for 135 and his 63-yard touchdown pass to Devin Smith with 3:43 left in the third quarter proved to be the decisive score in the game.
Ohio State took a 7-0 lead early on a 1-yard touchdown run by Jordan Hall. Michigan State responded with a field goal to make it 7-3 on its opening drive, but both teams were scoreless the rest of the half.
The teams traded field goals on the opening drives of the third quarter. Michigan State briefly led when Andrew Maxwell threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Keith Mumphery in the third quarter prior to Miller's touchdown pass to Smith. Michigan State added a field goal early in the third quarter.
Box Score Heroes: Braxton Miller made big plays in the passing game and the running game. He rushed 23 times for 135 yards and was 16-for-23 passing for 179 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He also ran for a big first down on Ohio State's final clock-killing drive.
Andrew Maxwell and the Michigan State passing game looked comfortable for the first time this season. He completed 22-of-42 passes for 269 yards and a touchdown. Defensive back Kurtis Drummond had a big day defensively, intercepting a pass and recovering a fumble.
Rankings Ramifications: Ohio State remains undefeated and a win over a ranked opponent could boost them higher than their No. 14 position. Michigan State is likely to fall out of the rankings after their second loss of the season.
But Did They Cover? There was no opening line in the game.
Next Week's Schedule: Michigan State travels to Indiana at noon Oct. 6. Ohio State hosts Nebraska at 8 p.m. Oct. 6.

The Michigan State Spartans and Ohio State Buckeyes had big plays in the passing on consecutive possessions in the third quarter that resulted in touchdowns as Ohio State leads Michigan State 17-13 after three quarters Saturday.
Both teams scored on their first possessions of the second half. Dan Conroy kicked a 50-yard field goal for Michigan State to cut the halftime lead to 7-6, then Ohio State responded with a 26-yard field goal by Drew Basil to push the lead back to 10-6.

Maxwell has passed for 237 yards through three quarters. Miller has thrown for 157 yards and rushed for 99 yards.

Both the Michigan State Spartans and Ohio State Buckeyes scored on their opening drives of the game, but then both defenses settled in and didn't allow a point the rest of the half, as Ohio State leads 7-3 at halftime.
Michigan State had a scoring opportunity in the final minute of the half, driving inside the Ohio State 25, but three straight incompletions by Andrew Maxwell were followed by a missed 42-yard field goal by Dan Conroy.

Miller threw a pass that was intercepted by Kurtis Drummond with 10:42 remaining in the second quarter. He lost a fumble in Michigan State territory with 2:20 left in the quarter on an option play. Michigan State Spartans defensive end William Gholston left Saturday's game against the Ohio State Buckeyes in the second quarter after he and several teammates converged to tackle Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller.
Gholston was briefly motionless on the field, briefly laying on top of Miller as trainers worked on him. Gholston eventually made it back to his feet and walked off the field on his own power.
On the ABC television coverage, it was reported that Gholston wasn't knocked unconscious, just that he had the wind knocked out of him.
Gillian Van Stratt of SpartanMag.com reported that Gholston passed tests given by trainers on the sideline:
Gholston "stretched his neck" according to Spartan Sports Network.Said he passed concussion tests "w/flying colors".Return definite.
— Gillian Van Stratt (@van_stratt) September 29, 2012
Gholston returned on Michigan State's next defensive series. The Spartans trail Ohio State 7-3 in the second quarter. Both teams scored on their opening drives, with the defenses dominating thereafter.

The Ohio State Buckeyes lead the Michigan State Spartans, 7-3, after the first quarter of Saturday's game.
Ohio State scored on the first drive of the game. Quarterback Braxton Miller rushed for 33 yards on the drive and the Buckeyes were aided by a 15-yard penalty on Michigan State for hitting Miller out of bounds on the drive, briefly knocking Miller out of the game, although he returned on the next series. Jordan Hall finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.
Michigan State responded with a 35-yard field goal by Dan Conroy on its first drive of the game.
Miller is 4-for-6 passing for 17 yards. He has ran the ball five times for 53 yards.
Michigan State's passing game, which has been criticized much of the season, particularly the team's wide receivers, has accounted for 74 of the team's 85 yards of offense. The receivers, however, still haven't been a big part of that. Running back Le'Veon Bell has caught five passes for 42 yards. Andrew Maxwell is 7-for-10 for 67 yards in the first quarter.

The 20th-ranked Michigan State Spartans football team looks for its second consecutive win over the No. 14 Ohio State Buckeyes at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in East Lansing on ABC. Michigan State is favored by 2.5 points.
Michigan State comes in hoping to jump start a passing attack that has been ineffective all season. Quarterback Andrew Maxwell has thrown for 869 yards in three games, but he's only completing 56 percent of his passes and Michigan State's young group of receivers has yet to come close to replicating the production of last year's departed top three, B.J. Cunningham, Keshawn Martin and Keith Nichol.
The offense has been saved by the performance of running back Le'Veon Bell. He's rushed for 610 yards and 5 touchdowns in four games, including a 253-yard performance last week against Eastern Michigan.
Ohio State comes into the game at 4-0. They've been led by quarterback Braxton Miller, who has passed for 754 yards and ran for 441 yards with 14 combined passing and rushing touchdowns this season.
Both teams come into the game after disappointing performances against Mid-Major opponents last week. Michigan State struggled to score until late in a 23-7 win over Eastern Michigan and Ohio State struggled but beat UAB 29-15 last week.
Michigan State won a defensive struggle between the two teams 10-7 last season.

Ohio State defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins hails from Dearborn Heights, Mich., and the pre-season All American had some interesting things to say when he was asked how he'd stop Spartan running back Le'Veon Bell. Hankins was asked which part of Bell he'd go after first as he tried to slow the MSU running back, and he responded with the following (via 610WTVN):
"I'm going to try to rip his head off"
The Buckeyes have struggled with some of the smaller backs they've had to face this season, so the defense seems to be excited about the prospect of the downhill running style generally seen in the Big Ten. Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer had the following to say about facing the Spartan rushing attack (via Mlive.com)
"I think our defense is kind of built for this, it's not built for sideline to sideline. So that's the challenge."
The Ohio State defense will get their shot at the Spartans on Saturday afternoon, as the 4-0 Buckeyes will head to East Lansing to face the 3-1 Spartans at 3:30 p.m. ET. The game can be seen on ABC.

Given the Michigan State Spartans' inexperienced group of wide receivers, head coach Mark Dantonio says, "there has been a little bit of thought," about playing starting cornerback Johnny Adams at the position occasionally, as Josh Slagter of MLive reports.
The Spartans' young receivers have battled some issues this year, especially in the team's 23-7 win over Eastern Michigan last week which featured an inordinate number of dropped passes. Through four games, no player on the team has more than 15 catches.
Those problems have the team considering Adams, an All-Big Ten defender at cornerback, as a possible weapon for the team's offense. In the team's spring game this year, he brought in a 45-yard pass, so the coaches have already seen him flash at least some of the skill set already.
In four games this season, Adams has recorded 12 tackles and four defended passes, plus he intercepted a pass against Central Michigan two weeks ago.

The remote set for ESPN's flagship college football show, College GameDay, will be set north of Beaumont Tower in East Lansing, Mich., on Saturday, Michigan State University has announced. Fans planning to attend the show should make note of this, as GameDay has typically been set at Munn Field near the stadium in the past.
Gates into the GameDay site will open at 7 a.m. local time on Saturday, giving fans time to settle in before Lee Corso and company join everyone. The 20th-ranked Spartans are hosting the 14th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes this weekend as both teams open their respective Big Ten conference schedules with a marquee game.
If you're planning to drive to the GameDay site on Saturday morning, Michigan State is offering parking in the Grand River Avenue ramp for $15, with Ramp 6 opening at 6:30 a.m.
The last time GameDay visited East Lansing, the Spartans upset then-No. 6 Wisconsin, 37-31, in October 2011.

ESPN announced on Sunday that College Gameday will be in East Lansing next week for the No. 20 Michigan State Spartans against the No. 14 Ohio State Buckeyes.
The Network noted that Gameday has been in East Lansing five times previously with the following results:
10/22/11 - (16) Michigan State def. (6) Wisconsin, 37-31
11/9/05 - (5) Penn State def. Michigan State, 22-21
9/18/04 - Notre Dame def. Michigan State, 31-24
10/9/99 - (11) Michigan State def. (3) Michigan, 34-31
10/25/97 - (5) Michigan def. (14) Michigan State, 23-7
Gameday begins airing live at 9 a.m. on ESPNU and then at 10 a.m. on ESPN. Chris Vannini of Michigan State blog The Only Colors noted that although Big Ten football hasn't exactly been stellar to this point in the season, ESPN didn't have many other marquee matchups to choose from for next week:
If you're wondering why Gameday is subjecting itself to Big Ten football, check out the schedule of games. Where else were they going to go? Tennessee at Georgia? Texas at Oklahoma State? Wisconsin at Nebraska? MSU/OSU is the only matchup between two ranked teams.
