Kieler joins fellow offensive lineman Travis Jackson on the sidelines. The sophomore center will also undergo season-ending surgery, on a broken right fibula, and is expected back for the spring. Injuries along the offensive line for the Spartans now mean senior Ethan Ruhland, who started at left tackle against Notre Dame, is now the starting center on the Spartans depth chart.
Kieler, a 6'6, 305-pound freshman from Rockwood, Mich., was the 14th commitment, and third offensive lineman, in Michigan State's 2012 recruiting class. As a senior in high school, Kieler did not allow a single sack. He chose the Spartans over several MAC schools, as well as Purdue and Minnesota.
Michigan State travels to Memorial Stadium to take on the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET, and the game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
