Darryl Stonum Dismissed From Michigan Wolverines Football Team

Darryl Stonum, a standout wide receiver and kick returner for the Michigan Wolverines, was dismissed from the football team on Tuesday afternoon. Head coach Brady Hoke made the announcement in a press release that cited a violation of team rules.

Stonum was arrested earlier this month for a probation violation and had been involved in four alcohol-related incidents over the course of his career. Coach Hoke did have kind words for his former receiver in the release issued by the team despite the off-field incidents, however.

"I love Darryl and wish him nothing but the absolute best," Hoke said. "However, there is a responsibility and a higher standard you must be accountable to as a University of Michigan football student-athlete. That does not and will not change. It's unfortunate because I believe he has grown a great deal as a person since the beginning of the season. My hope is that maturing process continues."

Stonum started 25 games for the Wolverines, amassing 1,008 yards and six touchdowns on 76 receptions. His biggest contributions may have come on special teams, however, as he returned 62 kickoffs for 1,538 yards and including a team-record 39 returns for 1,001 yards in 2009.
