DeAnthony Arnett Granted Waiver, Will Be Eligible For Michigan State In 2012

DeAnthony Arnett, a former Tennessee receiver who transferred to Michigan State in January, will be eligible to play for the Spartans this season, according to the official Twitter page for Michigan State football:

Arnett, a Saginaw native, chose Tennessee over Michigan State and Michigan but said he wanted to transfer closer to home because of his father, who has had multiple heart attacks.

Tennessee had initially blocked his transfer to either MSU or Michigan, but the school reneged and permitted the transfer to MSU.

As a freshman at Tennessee, Arnett had 24 receptions for 242 yards. Rivals.com ranked Arnett as the No. 12 receiver prospect in the 2011 class.

Michigan State Football To Submit Waiver For DeAnthony Arnett Soon

Michigan State associate athletic director John Lewandowski said that DeAnthony Arnett's request for a waiver to play this season after transferring from Tennessee is almost completed. Via Joe Rexrode:

MSU is waiting on a few more medical documents before submitting the waiver paperwork on DeAnthony Arnett, associate AD John Lewandowski said today. The expectation is that the NCAA will rule in three weeks once it receives those documents -- which could be any day now, Lewandowski said.

Arnett, who caught 24 passes last season as a freshman at Tennessee, transferred to Michigan State to be closer to his ailing father, who is currently on dialysis and recently had heart surgery. Arnett's home in Saginaw is less than an hour drive from the Spartans campus in East Lansing.

DeAnthony Arnett Will Apply For Waiver To Play In Fall For Spartans

Despite Tennessee initially trying to prevent wide receiver DeAnthony Arnett from transferring to Michigan State, the school he originally chose over UT, the rising sophomore is getting his wish and will be a Spartan in the fall.

The problem is that he may not be able to play, as general transfer rules force players to redshirt a season unless they seek a waiver. According to Rivals.com, Arnett is likely to seek a waiver:

Arnett’s brother says DeAnthony is set to apply for a hardship waiver early next week. Michigan State has not commented on Arnett’s situation, but his brother confirmed Saturday night he will be joining the Spartans.

Arnett, who is from Saginaw, said recently that his father has had multiple heart attacks and is on dialysis.

To acquire a waiver that would allow Arnett to play in the fall, an application would need to be submitted with sufficient reason for a waiver. The reviewing committee will ultimately look at and balance the purpose or intent of the request, the involvement and the overall well-being of the student-athlete, and any competitive or recruiting advantage that results in granting the waiver. We'll keep you posted as the process plays out.

DeAnthony Arnett To Transfer To Michigan State

The Michigan State Spartans are graduating one of the most decorated senior classes in school history, but they have already received some good news about potential replacements for the departing seniors. Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver DeAnthony Arnett has decided that he will transfer to the Spartans, reports George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press.

Arnett stayed just one season in Knoxville because he wanted to return home to be with his ailing father. But he might might be able to play immediately.

Arnett was a top-15 wide receiver recruit in the 2011 class and almost chose the Spartans over the Volunteers before he decided to head to the South. Now that he has chosen Michigan State, Arnett will either need to redshirt for a year, sitting out his true sophomore year, or apply for an NCAA hardship waiver to play this coming fall, as ESPN's Joe Schad reports.

Arnett caught 24 passes for 242 yards in 2011

DeAnthony Arnett Now Free To Transfer To Any School

There was quite the outcry last week when news came out that Tennessee was preventing wide receiver DeAnthony Arnett to transfer to Michigan or Michigan State. Arnett hoped to transfer closer to home (he's from Saginaw) because his dad is dealing with several health problems. Tennessee only granted him a release to the MAC schools in Michigan, however. It appeared to be yet another vindictive move by head coach Derek Dooley.

After dealing with quite a bit of negative PR for the last week or so, Tennessee has finally come to its senses, according to multiple reports. Dooley has changed course and will allow Arnett to transfer to any school he wants, and Arnett is quite happy, to say the least. From Joe Schad:

Arnett says Dooley is a "compassionate and empathetic coach. I will never be able to express fully my appreciations and gratitude..."

Allen Trieu reports that Arnett isn't sure where he will transfer yet, but that "it will be a speedy decision." Whenever a decision is made, I expect Arnett to become a Wolverine or Spartan.
