Denard Robinson, Devin Funchess Earn Big Ten Honors

The Michigan Wolverines avoided an upset from the Air Force Falcons on Saturday and, summarily, have been rewarded for their efforts as both Denard Robinson and Devin Funchess have won a couple of the awards given out by the Big Ten conference.

Robinson was named the conference's offensive player of the week, moving him into a tie for second with Drew Brees as far as the conference honors are concerned. Robinson also earned extra distinction by becoming the first player in FBS history to rush and pass for 200 yards each in three different games during his college career.

Funchess earned freshman of the week honors after hauling in four catches for 106 yards and a touchdown as he became the first Michigan tight end to record 100 receiving yards since Jerame Tuman in 1997.

Air Force Vs. Michigan 2012: Denard Robinson's Big Day Helps Wolverines Hold On

The Michigan Wolverines didn't make it look easy, but they did hold off the Air Force Falcons to pick up their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon. Denard Robinson contributed on four touchdowns as the 19th-ranked Wolverines held on for a 31-25 victory.

Robinson began his day with a 79-yard touchdown run to give the Wolverines a 7-0 victory early in the first quarter, but Air Force battled the whole way through, bringing the game to within a field goal when Cody Getz scored his third touchdown of the day with 12 minutes left to play.

Michigan was able to hold on, however, as the unranked Air Force squad couldn't overcome the play of the effervescent Robinson.

Box Score Hero: It'd be hard to vote for anyone but Robinson in this category considering the quarterback ran for 218 yards and a pair of touchdowns while contributing 208 yards and a pair of touchdowns with his arm as well.

Rankings Ramifications: Michigan's spot in the rankings was a bit contentious follow last week's loss, but Saturday's win should at least allow them to continue to stay within the top 20 when it comes to the polls.

But Did They Cover? No. Michigan was supposed to win by 21 points so the six-point margin of victory wasn't quite what was planned.

Next Week's Schedule: Robinson's Wolverines will look to pick another win against the UMass Minutemen while Air Force will try to get back on track when they travel to lovely Las Vegas for a game against the UNLV Runnin' Rebels.

Air Force Vs. Michigan: Wolverines Lead Heading Into 2nd Half

The Michigan Wolverines needed to bounce back in a big way following their season-opening loss and, through the first half, it seems like the 19th-ranked team is on its way to doing just that.

Enigmatic quarterback Denard Robinson has thrown for a touchdown and ran for another one, giving the Wolverines a 14-10 lead at halftime over visiting Air Force.

Robinson began Saturday's scoring with a huge run in the first quarter to give the Wolverines a 7-0 lead and then used his arm to get Michigan its second score when he connected with Devin Funchess for a 30-yard touchdown through the air. The quarterback finished the first half with 110 rushing yards and 136 passing yards with an errant interception the lone blemish on his stat sheet.

Air Force scored its first touchdown of the day late in the second quarter when running back Cody Getz took his 11th carry 5 yards up the middle for a score, giving him 49 yards on the ground in the first half.

Air Force Vs. Michigan: Wolverines Lead Early Thanks To Denard Robinson TD

The Michigan Wolverines didn't get off to the best start imaginable against unranked Air Force on Saturday afternoon, but the 19th-ranked team in the country still led 7-3 after the first quarter of play thanks to a huge Denard Robinson touchdown run.

Robinson caught a bit of flak for the Wolverines' defeat in the opening week, but his legs have never been a problem -- and that showed early Saturday afternoon, too, as he took a 79-yard run to the house to give Michigan a 7-0 lead. Robinson carried the ball six times for 85 yards in the first half and completed two of his three passes, too.

Fitzgerald Toussaint, returning from suspension, hasn't been used much yet as the running back carried the ball just three times for 6 yards in the opening quarter.

Air Force got on the board with a 22-yard field goal from Parker Herrington after their second drive of the day sputtered.

Air Force Vs. Michigan 2012: Game Time, TV Schedule, Spread And More

The Michigan Wolverines will start their climb back up the polls on Saturday when they host the Air Force Falcons. The Michigan offense will almost certainly have an easier time against Air Force's defense than they did Alabama's, but it's the Michigan defense that may be of some concern to Wolverines fans. That has less to do with Michigan's defense itself than the fact that the Falcons run the triple option, which the Wolverines will be concentrating on this week.

Vegas, though, does not share those concerns, as Michigan will enter the game as a three-touchdown favorite. The Falcons blanked the Idaho State Bengals in the first half of their Week 1 game before the Bengals put up 21 points in the second half in what was an eventual 45-21 victory by the Falcons. They finished the 2011 season with a 7-6 record.

Game time, TV channel: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC/ESPN2

Point spread: Michigan favored by 21 points

Michigan Vs. Air Force: Falcons Center Michael Husar Out For Season

Air Force Academy center Michael Husar will miss the remainder of the 2012 season with ACL and MCL injuries in his left knee, according to Frank Schwab of the Colorado Springs Gazette. Husar's injury leaves the Falcons without one of their best linemen as they prepare for Saturday's game against the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Husar suffered the knee injury during Air Force's season-opening 49-21 demolishing of Idaho State. Husar, whose father played for the Wolverines, was replaced at center by junior Austin Hayes.

Air Force is notorious for its option attack, which requires solid fundamentals from the team's offensive line. As such, any key injury within the group spells trouble for the Falcons, who ran for 484 yards in their first game.

Devin Gardner Primarily Playing Wide Receiver ... For Now

The depth chart Michigan released before the season had Devin Gardner listed as the backup quarterback. It was well known that he had been practicing at wide receiver quite a bit, but considering he was still listed as the backup quarterback, it wasn't clear which position was receiving the majority of his attention.

On Saturday against Alabama, it became obvious that the depth chart wasn't accurate. Gardner played a lot of receiver, and when Denard Robinson got dinged up, it was Russell Bellomy who warmed up and was ready to enter the game, not Gardner. On Monday, Brady Hoke confirmed in an updated depth chart that Bellomy is the backup quarterback and Gardner is the team's No. 3 quarterback. What's more, Hoke confirmed that Gardner is a wide receiver first for right now.

Gardner considers himself a football player and doesn't view this switch to wide receiver as a permanent move. In fact, he wants to compete for the starting job at quarterback next season after Robinson graduates.

With Bellomy serving as the backup quarterback for now and five-star quarterback recruit Shane Morris joining the team next year, it remains to be seen how that competition will shake out. What's clear right now is that Gardner is one of Michigan's best options at wide receiver, which is why he is primarily playing that position in 2012.

Fitzgerald Toussaint, Frank Clark To Play Against Air Force

The Michigan Wolverines certainly struggled on Saturday against the Alabama Crimson Tide, provided you can call such a beatdown a "struggle." Two of their players were absent in the game, though it is unlikely it would have changed the outcome in the end. Still, Stephen J. Nesbitt is reporting via Twitter that both running back Fitzgerald Toussaint and defensive end Frank Clark will play this week against Air Force.

Toussaint was suspended for one game due to an arrest for drunk driving, though he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge last week. He's the team's starting running back and it was thought for awhile that he might actually play against Alabama, before it was announced on Friday that he would not.

Clark also served a one-game suspension for his involvement in an alleged laptop theft.

Toussaint had 1,041 yards on the ground a season ago and was certainly missed by the Wolverines, even if his presence wouldn't have changed the final outcome of Saturday's game. Michigan will take on Air Force at 3:30 p.m. eastern on Saturday at Michigan Stadium.
