Tigers vs. Yankees: Joe Girardi calls for more instant replay

Joe Girardi wants to see some changes to Major League Baseball's current instant replay policies.

Following New York's 3-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers in Game 2 of the ALCS on Sunday, Yankees manager Joe Girardi voiced his opinion that Major League Baseball needs more comprehensive instant replay coverage. "Let's have instant replay," Girardi said afterward. "And not just home run fair (or) foul (calls). Let's have instant replay."

Girardi's comments stem from an eighth-inning incident during which Detroit second baseman Omar Infante appeared to be tagged out at second base but was called safe by umpire Jeff Nelson. Girardi was thrown out of the game for arguing the call. Here is the play in question:

Had Infante been called out, the inning would have been over, and the Tigers would have had a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth. Instead, the Tigers were able to tack on two more runs in the inning and increase their lead to 3-0.

Girardi did not fault Nelson but maintained that changes are necessary:

"I don't have a problem with Jeff's effort, I don't, because he hustled to get the play. But in this day and age when we have instant replay available to us, it's got to change."

Game 3 of the ALCS is set for Tuesday night in Detroit.
