Justin Verlander doesn't want fans to boo Jose Valverde

Kelley L Cox-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Jose Valverde may be struggling of late, but Tigers ace Justin Verlander still hopes that fans won't resort to booing their home team's players during a playoff run.

With the Detroit Tigers trying to bring a World Series title to the Motor City this year, ace pitcher Justin Verlander wants nothing but positive vibes as the Tigers try to put away the New York Yankees at Comerica Park this week. The fans might be able to find some reasons to boo, but Verlander thinks happy thoughts could go a long way towards winning.

Considering the struggles of closer Jose Valverde this season, fans will surely be tempted to direct their frustrations his way, but Verlander hopes that fans will hold off in the name of supporting a winning team:

Really, honestly, I'd like to see no negative reaction... We're in the postseason, and any positive vibe we can get will help us win.

Over the Tigers' first seven postseason games, Valverde has made three appearances, allowing seven runs while recording just four outs. Given his inability to get hitters out recently, manager Jim Leyland has discussed using other pitchers in possible save opportunities, but the closer still has the support of his team's ace, at least.

The Tigers are hosting the Yankees in Game 3 at 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday as the ALCS continues.
