Max Scherzer takes to the mound with the Tigers on the verge of a World Series birth.

The Detroit Tigers will have a chance on Wednesday night to sweep the New York Yankees and clinch a birth in this year's World Series -- all they'll have to do is beat CC Sabathia. The Yankees ace will be on the hill as the team looks to salvage its season, and he's been brilliant so far in these playoffs, pitching 17.2 innings in two starts while allowing just three earned runs and striking out 16.

The Tigers will counter with Max Scherzer, who allowed no earned runs over 5.1 innings while striking out eight batters in his lone playoff start against the Oakland Athletics. Scherzer faced the Yankees once this season, but it was way back in late April in a start in Yankee Stadium. In that game, Scherzer allowed seven hits and seven walks in 4.2 innings, giving up three earned runs.

Scherzer is a different pitcher now, though, and if he pitches as he has for much of the year, the Tigers may be popping champagne on Wednesday night.

First pitch is at 8:07 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on TBS.
