Omar Infante injury not serious after jammed thumb

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports - Presswire

Tigers second baseman Omar Infante jammed his thumb while diving for a ball in the ninth inning of the Tigers' 2-1 win on Tuesday night, but should be able to play on Wednesday.

Lost in the excitement during the ninth inning of the Tigers' 2-1 win over the Yankees in Game 3 of the ALCS on Tuesday night was the potential injury to Omar Infante's hand. Infante jammed his thumb while diving for a Mark Teixeira single, and there were concerns that he seriously injured his hand. However, the X-rays came back negative, and Infante says that he should be able to play in Game 4 on Wednesday night.

Infante has brought much-needed consistency to the second base position for Detroit since been acquired from the Marlins. With another year on his contract, Infante is slated to be the Tigers' second baseman in 2013 as well.

The Tigers have a 3-0 lead over the Yankees in the American League Championship Series and could advance to the World Series for the second time in seven years with a win. Max Scherzer will take the ball for the Tigers against the Yankees' CC Sabathia.

The game will be televised on TBS beginning at 8 p.m. ET.
