Yankees vs. Tigers final score: Detroit advances to World Series with 8-1 victory

The Tigers wrapped up a complete four-game sweep of the Yankees on Thursday to advance to the 2012 World Series.

Led by yet another dominant pitching performance against New York hitters, the Detroit Tigers officially put the finishing touches on a brilliant four-game sweep of the Yankees on Thursday night at Comerica Park, 8-1.

The Tigers tacked on a quick run in the first inning from the bat of designated hitter Delmon Young to take early control of the game, and were then allowed to sit back and relax as right-hander Max Scherzer proceeded to carve up Yankees by the handful. A two-run mammoth blast from slugger Miguel Cabrera in the fourth helped to set the tone for the game soon thereafter, as teammate Jhonny Peralta followed suit with a two-run homer of his own to effectively send New York pitcher CC Sabathia to the showers, and home until the start of spring training next year.

Though Scherzer's no-hit bid was eventually broken up in the sixth frame, the righty left the mound with 10 strikeouts and just two hits allowed to pick up his first postseason win of 2012. Peralta would later add another home run to help give the Tigers a whopping 16 hits as a team, but Scherzer's gutsy performance against a potent New York lineup may have been the game's biggest story.

Now forced to wait around for the conclusion of the NLCS, the Tigers will prepare for Game 1 of the World Series scheduled for Oct. 24. The first two games of the series are set to be played in either St. Louis or San Francisco, but Tigers ace Justin Verlander will most assuredly take the ball in Game 1.
