Jim Leyland was 'scared to death' when Doug Fister got hit in head

The Tigers pitcher was hit in the head by a line drive in the second inning of Game 2 of the World Series.

When Tigers pitcher Doug Fister got hit with a line drive in the head that ricocheted into center field, it was a moment that scared many, including Jim Leyland. The Tigers manager told Chris Lott of MLive that the hit was a scary moment, although Fister quelled the panic by shrugging off the hit and answering every question that the athletic trainers asked him.

"I don't want to make light of it, but it was kind of comical really, because Doug was right on with everything," he (Leyland) said. "But I was scared to death when it happened."

Following the hit to the head that came with two outs in the second inning, Fister stayed in the game and pitched extremely well, not allowing another hit until the sixth inning. However, Fister earned the loss after allowing a run in the seventh inning before being replaced by Drew Smyly, while the Tigers were unable to score a run at all against Madison Bumgarner and the Giants bullpen.

With the loss, the Giants have a 2-0 lead in the series over the Tigers and Game 3 between the two teams will take place on Saturday at 8:07 p.m.
