MLB playoff schedule 2012: Tigers will host ALDS games this weekend

Denny Medley-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The Detroit Tigers will host two playoff games over the weekend, but their opponent is still up in the air.

The Detroit Tigers know this much: they will play two playoff games at home this weekend. The first game will be on Saturday with one following it on Sunday, though times are currently still unknown. Who exactly their opponent will be is still unknown, though, as both the A.L. East and A.L. West enter the season's final day with their division races undecided.

In the A.L. West, two teams -- the Oakland Athletics and Texas Rangers -- are tied for first, and happen to face each other on Wednesday. The loser of that game will drop to the league's one-game play-in game. In the A.L. East, the New York Yankees lead the Baltimore Orioles by one game. A Yankees win clinches the division, but a loss coupled with an Orioles win will force a one-game tiebreaker to determine who slides to the play-in game.

Of the two teams that ultimately win their divisions, Detroit will face the one with the worse record. If the Yankees win on Wednesday, they'll hit 95 wins and will face the winner of the play-in game. That would leave the Tigers with the A.L. West division winner, who can only max out at 94 wins. But if the Yankees lose, things get more complicated. That would mean that both the East and West division winners -- regardless of what Baltimore does -- would finish with 94 wins, meaning that Detroit's division series opponent would be determined by tiebreaker.

So, the Tigers will be hosting somebody on Saturday, but it may take until late Thursday night for that to be determined.
