Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Detroit Tigers pitcher Doug Fister set an AL record by striking out nine consecutive batters against the Kansas City Royals.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Doug Fister (10-9, 3.43 ERA) set an American League record with nine consecutive strikeouts against the Kansas City Royals on Sept. 27.

Fister started the streak by striking out Salvador Perez to end the top of the fourth inning. In the fifth, Fister struck out Mike Moustakas, Jeff Francoeur, and Brayan Pena on 14 pitches. He continued his streak in the sixth, getting Johnny Giavotella, David Lough, and Alcides Escobar on only 11 pitches. In the seventh inning, Fister struck out Alex Gordon and Billy Butler, but the streak ended when Perez grounded out to short to end the inning.

Fister struggled in the eighth, allowing three runs in of an inning before getting pulled; he ended the game with 10 strikeouts.

Fister fell one short of the MLB record of 10 straight strikeouts set by Tom Seaver on April 22, 1970 with the New York Mets against the San Diego Padres.
