Michigan Begins Hockey Season Tonight

Usually the first weekend of October is reserved for exhibition games and scrimmages, but the Michigan hockey team begins its season tonight. The Wolverines are the only team playing host to an actual game this weekend, welcoming in Mercyhurst for the season opener.

In order to get ready for the season, here are some notes on the Michigan hockey team:

  • If Michigan wins tonight, it will be the 700th victory of head coach Red Berenson's career.

  • Shawn Hunwick will start at goalie for the Wolverines tonight. Bryan Hogan will get the start for Sunday's exhibition game against Western Ontario.

  • Michigan is ranked fourth in the USA Today Poll.
  • ↵
  • Michigan is predicted to win the CCHA based on a vote taken by coaches from the conference. The media have the Wolverines finishing second behind Miami (Ohio).

  • Carl Hagelin, Louie Caporusso and Matt Rust were selected as preseason members of the All-CCHA Team. Hagelin and Caporusso were voted as first-teamers and Rust a second-teamer.

  • The Big Ten Network released its hockey television schedule for the upcoming season. Six of the nine games involve Michigan, including The Big Chill at the Big House, which will be televised by both FS Detroit and the Big Ten Network.
