The Stanley Cup Final this year was a nightmare for Red Wings fans as far as rooting for a team went. While it thankfully didn't involve both the Blackhawks and Penguins, the Flyers' inclusion wasn't much easier to swallow. After all, Chris Pronger is one of the most hated players in all of the NHL, and he was Philly's biggest name. Not to mention that Ville Leino, a player the Wings traded this past season, was lighting it up for the Flyers. It was one of those times where you jokingly root for stadium implosion because neither option is truly worth pulling for.
I will admit, though, as tough as it was, I did end up pulling for Philly, especially in Game 6 when the series was on the line. Why, you ask? I think it's pretty obvious why I would be rooting for Chicago's opponent, but in case it's not, check out the video after the jump.
I know Blackhawks fans are new to winning and most are new to hockey in general, but how big of an inferiority complex must you have to chant "DETROIT SUCKS" during a celebration for the Stanley Cup? It'd be one thing if this was an isolated incident, but by all accounts it happened numerous times during their parade yesterday as well. I suppose Blackhawks fans would rather cheer against Detroit than for their own team, but you'd think when winning the Stanley Cup it wouldn't be necessary.
The best comparison to what most Blackhawks fans are like goes back to the season when Michigan lost to Appalachian State. It was an extremely embarrassing defeat and opposing fan bases were not shy about letting us Michigan fans hear about it. Trash talk was understandable, but I could only shake my head and laugh when I went to the Michigan-Michigan State game in East Lansing and saw a few MSU fans in Appalachian State shirts. Some good-natured ribbing is expected, but anybody that wears the shirt of a team that beat Michigan earlier in the season instead of one representing their own school is an absolute moron.
I will point out that it's not like every MSU fan was like that or anything. In fact, there were only a few. With Blackhawks fans, however, the majority of them would apparently rather spend their time yelling about how Detroit sucks instead of just celebrating the fact that the Chicago won the Stanley Cup. That's obviously their prerogative and isn't a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but anybody who thought Red Wings fans should root for the Blackhawks because it would enhance the rivalry or because they're in the same division needs to watch the video above. No, it wasn't much better rooting for Chris Pronger and the Flyers, but I would have rather seen Philly get a Stanley Cup instead of the 'Hawks, whose fan base is so obsessed with the Wings that they actually chanted "DETROIT SUCKS" at Stanley Cup celebrations.
