Monday Is Ernie Harwell Day In Detroit

June 21 is the first day of summer. What better way is there to bring in the new season than by remembering the voice of summer? For anyone who knew of Ernie Harwell there isn't, and now, that's exactly what the day will represent:

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has issued an official proclamation making Monday "Ernie Harwell Day" in the city.

↵Bing says in the proclamation that "Harwell’s distinctive voice not only announced baseball games, but also signified the beginning of summer."

This isn't the only day that's been set aside to remember the Hall of Fame play-by-play man who passed away last month after nearly a year-long bout with cancer. The Michigan Senate approved a resolution in March to have April 9, 2010 be Ernie Harwell Day, as well. If that doesn't tell you how much Ernie Harwell meant to the great state of Michigan and city of Detroit, I really don't know what else will.
