Zumaya Leaves Game With Arm Injury

Detroit Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya left Monday night’s contest with the Minnesota Twins with what looked like a serious injury to his throwing arm.

Zumaya crumpled to the ground in obvious pain after delivering a 3-1 pitch to Delmon Young in the bottom of the eighth inning. Zumaya writhed on the ground for several moments as the Tigers staff attended to him, holding his trembling right arm.

Zumaya has had injury issues in the past, and from the look of the television replays, this could be the worst of them all. It’s impossible to tell from the replay, but by the look of Zumaya’s reaction this could very well be career-ending.

Jose Valverde came in to relieve Zumaya and struck out Young and got Nick Punto to fly out to end the inning.
