The Detroit Free Press writes that the Cleveland Cavaliers' courtship of Michigan State coach Tom Izzo is unique because Cleveland Owner Dan Gilbert, Michigan State Athletic Director Mark Hollis and Izzo are all friends.
Hollis told the Lansing State Journal on Monday that he considered Gilbert “a good friend.” Gilbert has praised Izzo as a coach and a person.
“I know Dan and Tom talk,” Hollis told the Associated Press, “and that Dan has reached out to talk to Tom in the past.”
So what can Hollis do to keep his friend from hiring his other friend?
“We’re meeting daily, all hours,” Hollis told the State Journal. “We’re a support base for each other.”
